Lithuania, Massachusetts Institute of Technology sign cooperation agreement

January 29, 2025
A consortium of Lithuanian universities, research centres, and public and private sector companies signed a cooperation agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius on Tuesday.

The consortium for the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) programme in Lithuania is led by Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) and includes the Kaunas University of Technology, Klaipėda University, Vilnius University, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Vilnius Academy of Arts, the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, the Lithuanian Energy Institute, Ignitis Group, Lithuanian Railways, Novian, and Euromonitor International – Eastern Europe.

“VILNIUS TECH is a proud partner in the consortium that has established a formal collaboration agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI). Tonight we were discussing the preparations for the top league. We see great potential and opportunities in working together with the core of the US innovation ecosystem to analyse, explore and research various fields such as artificial intelligence, sustainability, cybersecurity, energy, and robotics. This collaboration also aims to produce joint research publications, to exchange talent, and to share experiences in entrepreneurship promotion systems and methodologies. Our expectation is for the most realistic and long-term strategic partnership possible, and we are looking forward to establishing links with top MIT researchers as soon as possible“, says Romualdas Kliukas, Rector of VILNIUS TECH.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Gitanas Nausėda said the partnership with MIT underscores Lithuania’s commitment to attracting top-tier talent, fostering a culture of excellence, and investing in innovation.

“Participation in the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives programme has the potential to reshape not only Lithuania’s academic and scientific landscape but also the very foundation of our economy,” the President’s Office quoted him as saying in a press release.

“It positions our country as a hub of innovation – a nation increasingly recognised for its contributions to high-tech industries, cutting-edge research, and groundbreaking solutions to global challenges,” he said.

VDU Rector Professor Juozas Augutis called the partnership a recognition of Lithuania’s potential, saying the programme will strengthen transatlantic ties, boost the country’s global visibility, and help attract foreign investment and talent.

“The planned forms of cooperation include joint scientific and artistic research, technology and business projects, innovation development, international mobility for scientists and students, STEAM and entrepreneurship lessons in Lithuanian schools or STEAM centres, training, MIT student internships in Lithuania, and more,” VDU said in a press release.

“Special programs in areas such as artificial intelligence and climate change are also being considered,” it added.

MIT consistently ranks among the world’s top universities, frequently holding the number one spot in various rankings.

New Tool for VILNIUS TECH Researchers: Facilitating Scholarly Journal Selection and the Evaluation of Publishing Opportunities
VILNIUS TECH Library specialists have developed a Scholarly Journal Selection Tool For Publication, which helps researchers identify the most suitable academic journal for publishing their articles more quickly and efficiently. The tool enables users to evaluate the key journal selection criteria in one place and make informed publishing decisions. “Disseminating research results is an important part of academic activity, yet finding the right journal often requires considerable time and effort. Researchers need to assess a journal’s scope, quality indicators, indexing in international databases, open access options, and publication costs. The new tool developed by Library specialists helps simplify this process. One of its greatest advantages is the ability to easily identify journals where VILNIUS TECH researchers can publish open access articles without paying an Article Processing Charge (APC),” says Ingrida Kasperaitienė, Director of the VILNIUS TECH Library. The tool helps researchers find journals in which VILNIUS TECH authors can publish their articles in open access without APC fees. These opportunities are made possible through agreements concluded by the Lithuanian Research Library Consortium (LMBA) with international publishers, under which article publication costs are covered through institutional subscription funding. If you have any questions regarding publishing, open access, or selecting the most appropriate journal, VILNIUS TECH Library specialists are ready to provide guidance and help you find the best solution.
