Welcome to the homepage of the EURO Working Group "Operation Research in Sustainable Development and Civil Engineering"

Scope and tasks

The application of OR methods in issues of sustainable development and civil engineering is important in striving to resolve the conflicts between the various competing goals in pursuit of economic prosperity, environmental quality, social equity and technological efficiency.
Emphasizing the aforementioned issues the working group raises the following objectives:
  • to develop and apply the Multicriteria Methods in the fields of sustainable development and civil engineering;
  • to promote the innovations based on application of Multicriteria Methods in construction industry;
  • to facilitate the collaborations between European researchers working in field of OR in civil engineering and sustainable development; The primary purpose of the Working Group “ OR in Sustainable Development and Civil Engineering ” is to stimulate collaboration in area of OR in sustainable development and civil engineering.
  • to ensure the continuity and progress of work and to transfer for scientific communities the ideas of multicriteria decision aiding, the results of work, thoughts and important discussions of group members by means of annual meetings and conferences.
Besides these objectives Working Group “ OR in Sustainable Development and Civil Engineering ” is aiming for:
  • to distribute red-hot information and support scientific researches concerned with decision making in construction;
  • to promote qualifying young researchers and students working in area of decision making in construction;
  • to participate organizing community of European researchers working in area of decision making in construction;
  • to create permanent information channels and organize regular meetings;
  • to coordinate making decision making methodology in construction sector;
  • to involve construction enterprises and individual users of decision theory in the activities listed above.
The scope of problem in research activities of the Working Group “ OR in Sustainable Development and Civil Engineering ” covers wide range of rational decision-making problems within the field of sustainable development and civil engineering . These problems can be joined into the following groups:
  • Sustainable urban development;
  • Issues of the construction process harmonization, optimization and reliability;
  • Creation, improvement and application of the multiple criteria decision-making methods;
  • Creation of decision support systems intended for designing rational technological processes;
  • Problems related with the application of construction expert methods and the created expert systems;
  • Complex analysis of a building life cycle, lifetime engineering, creation of the building life-cycle process models;
  • Analysis, modeling and forecasting in construction;
  • Development of multiple criteria analysis in facilities management;
  • Efficiency increase of e-commerce systems in construction applying multiple criteria decision support systems.
The decision to establish Working Group “OR in Sustainable Development and Civil Engineering” was taken after long international collaboration between researchers from several European countries (Lithuania, Germany, Poland, United Kingdom, Belgium, Danmark, Latvia, Estonia, Czech Republic, Slovenia). The working group was created at EURO XXIII (Bonn, 2009). Proposal for establishment  (https://vilniustech.lt/upload/stf_orsdce/wg_proposal_2009.pdf)
