Well-being is the goal of the Faculty of Architecture community
Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) Faculty of Architecture (FA) lecturers are taking part in the Danish experts' training this spring and are striving not only for even stronger educational competences, but also for a deeper connection with the students.
AF is working with Studenterrådgivningen, a student psychological counselling service from Denmark (www.srg.dk), which works with various universities in Europe to provide support to both students and lecturers. This spring, the AF lecturers hope to better understand architecture students and work together to achieve even higher results.
In April, the first live faculty training took place, with Johann Daustrand visiting the faculty to share his knowledge about the new generation of students and to ask questions of the faculty. Johann Daustrand presented what is typical for Generation Z, how the human brain works and that students' struggle with difficulties can be described in three groups: perfectionists, withdrawers, questioners. The expert also presented the experience of the Aarhus School of Architecture.
"The students' experiences discussed in the presentation are the same ones I hear when I advise VILNIUS TECH students: high responsibility, anxiety, self-blame, fear that something is wrong with their emotions, thoughts; the belief that they are the only ones facing difficulties. So I can only confirm that this kind of thinking is common among today's students", - shared her impressions VILNIUS TECH psychologist Rasa Urbanavičiūtė.
Johann Daustrand shared with teachers a 4-step programme to better understand, meet the needs of and motivate students. He also presented the principles of universal design that can help every teacher in their work and invited everyone to think about what kind of teaching and learning and study culture we are aiming for in our university.
The AF community hopes that the Studenterrådgivningen training will make an important contribution to the continuous professional development of lecturers and to the growth of the faculty community: for well-being, for a stronger bond between students and professors, and for the training of not only professionals in their field, but also for the development of personalities of high emotional intelligence.
The second part of the training for AF lecturers will take place in mid-May, when the lecturers will try to apply the knowledge they have acquired in a workshop together with students.
