Department of Architectural fundamentals, Theory and Art
It is the only university department in Lithuania specializing in ARCHITECTURE STUDIES.
The purpose of the department:
- to educate architectural researchers, to develop research in the fields of architectural history, theory, criticism and heritage protection.
Main activities:
- art history, research of architectural and urban heritage, research and design of architectural objects, architectural composition, semantics and psychology.

History
The Department of Fundamentals and Theory of Architecture was founded in 2002, its founder and head until 2011. - prof. dr. Rimantas Buivydas. In 2011-2014, the department was headed by doc. dr. Liutauras Nekrošius, and currently Edita Riaubienė. An important area of activity is the preparation of dissertations in the field of art history. The Department of Fundamentals and Theory of Architecture has prepared and defended 13 dissertations in the field of art history, currently 8 doctoral students are studying at the Department.
Studies
In the study program of architecture, the lecturers of the department teach the subjects of history, theory and composition of architecture.
12 disciplines are taught in Lithuanian and English:
- Art history
- History of architecture 1
- History of Architecture 2
- Isotria of Lithuanian architecture
- Ethnic culture
- Modern architecture
- Architect ethics
- Architecture and psychology
- Monument protection and regeneration
- Basics of composition
- Analysis of building composition
- Urban composition.
In the second cycle study program of architecture, the lecturers of the department teach 4 theoretical subjects:
- Fundamentals of architectural research
- Semiotics of architecture
- Objects of modern culturology and mass communication
- Protection of the immovable cultural heritage.
