Department of Architectural fundamentals, Theory and Art
Aim of the Department:
Main fields of activity: art history, research on architectural and urban heritage, research and design of architectural objects, architectural composition, semantics and psychology, interaction between architecture and visual arts.
- to educate architects and architectural researchers able to bridge design, research and theoretical knowledge in their practice;
- to provide architecture and landscape architecture students with humanitarian and broad artistic competences and skills;
- develop research in the fields of architectural history, theory, criticism, heritage conservation, the interaction of the arts, as well as artistic research in architecture and the visual arts.

History
A Master's degree programme in History and Theory of Architecture was developed and the Department of Fundamentals and Theory of Architecture was established In 2002 by prof. dr. Rimantas Buivydas. The Department not only conducted the Master's degree programme in History and Theory of Architecture, but also supervised a number of modules of the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Architecture. Until 2019, it was the only university department in Lithuania specialized in architectural research studies. An important part of the department's pedagogical work is the supervision of PhD students in the field of art history. 13 dissertations of humanitarian sciences in the field of history and theory of architecture has prepared and defended in the department of Fundamentals, Theory and Art of Architecture.
In 2017, the Department of Fundamentals and Theory of Architecture merged with the Department of Art. This integration of the units of the Faculty of Architecture has further highlighted the complexity of the Department's profile and activities, encompassing the fields of arts and humanities studies and research, architecture, architectural studies, visual arts and landscape pedagogy, research, and architectural and visual arts practices.
The most recent development of the Department is the Landscape Architecture degree programme, which will be implemented in cooperation with the Department of Urban Planning from 2021.
The founder of the Department, Prof. Rimantas Buivydas, headed the Department from 2002 to 2011, assoc. prof. dr. Liutauras Nekrošius from 2011 to 2014, assoc. prof. dr. Edita Riaubienė from 2014-2022. Currently, the head of the Department is prof. dr. Audrius Novickas.
In 2017, the Department of Fundamentals and Theory of Architecture merged with the Department of Art.
