New doctoral dissertation
VILNIUS TECH Library invites you to follow the published new dissertations. The dissertation „Research of resistance to alkali-silica reaction of cement composite with metakaolin and glass wastes“ („Cementinio kompozito su metakaolino ir stiklo atliekomis atsparumo šarminei korozijai tyrimai“) prepared by VILNIUS TECH, Kęstutis Barkauskas. The dissertation was prepared in 2018–2023, supervisor Prof. Dr Džigita Nagrockienė.
The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defence Council of the Scientific Field of Materials Engineering in the Senate Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 10 a. m. on 11 May 2023.
„Lithuania, like other countries, faces the problem of accumulating hard-to-use glass waste. Using this waste in the concrete industry could help solve the waste glass utilisation problem and reduce the amount of natural sand used in cement composites. Unfortunately, crushed glass reduces resistance to alkali-silica reactions. Alkali-silica reaction is one of the main reasons for the decay of cement composites, which leads to the cracking of structures and the pitting of surfaces. Alkali-silica reaction requires moisture and heat. The probability of this reaction is reduced by using low-alkaline cements, selecting aggregates uncontaminated with reactive particles, and adding various active mineral additives. The doctoral dissertation aims to develop a cement composite resistant to the alkali-silica reaction by recovering the maximum amounts of crushed and milled waste glass and metakaolin and using them to replace cement and sand in the composite mixture. The dissertation consists of an introduction, three chapters, general conclusions, a bibliography and a list of the author’s publications on the dissertation topic. The introductory chapter discusses the research problem and the relevance of the research work, describes the research object, formulates the aim and objectives of the research work, describes the research methodology, the scientific novelty of the work, the practical significance of the results, and defended statements. At the end of the introduction, the author’s publications and conference papers on the topic of the dissertation are presented, as well as the structure of the dissertation.“
