VGTU students created distantly guided robot hand

Young engineers from Vilnius Gediminas technical University (VGTU) presented distantly guided robot hand.  The hand precisely imitates movements of the handbreadth and may even substitute people‘s hand in various situations, such as taking or moving different objects from difficult to reach or dangerous for health places. The robot hand imitates the movements of the handbreadth of a person and manages it very precisely: the bending of a finger is fixed through thirty eight positions. The mechanical hand is guided using a special glove with modern technologies installed, i.e. students created supersensitive optical sensors, which by Bluetooth transfer signals as electronic impulses to the robot hand. Robot hand‘s mini engines receive these impulses and move the fingers of the hand.

„We created the hand mainly for the laboratories with radio-active materials or light radiating devices. This hand may perform various jobs, standing behind a special partition wall and moving the hand with glove“ – explain Dalius Kazakevicius and Vytenis Kruminis, students from the Faculty of Electronics, Department of Computer Engineering of VGTU.

During the creation process one of them built a handbreadth sized robot hand, the other – a glove for management of the hand. Young engineers affirm that knowledge of mathematics, programming and new technologies as well as creativity helped them to bring their idea to life – the robot‘s hand is simple to manage and easy to adapt to various situations. They are still improving the hand and planning to install more sensors in order to improve its dynamics and expand functions. For the first time this distantly guided robot hand was presented during the International knowledge and education exhibition „Studies 2014“. A hexapod spider robot, created by the students of the Department of Computer Engineering of VGTU, was also examined. Recently the robot is under constant development and is mostly used for scientific experiments. The authors are planning further application of this walking robot: they are creating a special programme allowing the robot to walk on different surfaces and clean windows without any additional management.

One more attractive work of students of the Faculty of Electronics of  VGTU is a balance keeping two-wheel robot, which reminds a playful cat. That is why it was called Tom, just like the cat from the popular animation film „Tom and Jerry“ is called.

During the exhibition „Studies 2014“ the representatives of VGTU presented the innovations created at the university and the university study programs; they also lectured on ‘‘the green“ and alternative energy, ecological building materials, medical engineering and modern technologies, creative  and entertainment industries, bridge engineering as well as explained how to choose the best and most attractive profession.

The visitors of the exhibition had a possibility to learn about the VGTU summer camp and different professions; to have an unofficial consultation about the best higher school, the studies and the choice of a program. For relaxation they were invited to participate at ‘‘the intelligence fights“.
