VILNIUS TECH Commits to Climate Neutrality: Steps Towards a Sustainable Future
As Vilnius prepares to become the 2025 European Green Capital, VILNIUS TECH has officially committed to supporting the city’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2030. The university actively contributes to these ambitions through research, collaboration with local authorities, and support for entrepreneurship.
VILNIUS TECH plans to contribute to these sustainability goals in several key ways. Firstly, the university will conduct research on sustainable technologies, renewable energy, and innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions and enhance urban sustainability.
Additionally, VILNIUS TECH will work closely with Vilnius city officials to align strategies, share research outcomes, and engage in joint projects aimed at climate neutrality.
In partnership with local stakeholders, the university will also launch energy efficiency programs, focusing on retrofitting buildings and promoting the use of renewable energy. These initiatives are critical for reducing the city’s energy consumption and environmental impact.
Finally, through the Sustainability Hub, VILNIUS TECH will encourage startups and entrepreneurs to create and implement green technologies that address urban sustainability challenges. This not only helps to solve the city’s problems but also fosters innovation and entrepreneurship in the sustainability sector.
In order to further strengthen the university's leadership in the areas of sustainability and innovation, in June 2025, VILNIUS TECH will host the NORDTEK conference for Northern European technical universities, focusing on the theme "Green and Digital University Transformation." This conference will feature universities from 13 Nordic cities, all of which are part of the European Commission’s Climate Neutral Cities initiative – a project aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2030. These universities will share their experiences of collaboration, offering insights on how cities are implementing the Climate Neutral Cities strategy. This event, coinciding with Vilnius being named the European Green Capital, reflects the university's goal of contributing to the achievement of sustainability objectives.
Being the European Green Capital is not just an honour, but also a responsibility. This title represents continuous efforts toward sustainability, climate protection, and improving the quality of life for the city’s residents. VILNIUS TECH is committed to fulfilling this responsibility by promoting innovation, education, and collaboration that will positively transform our city.
