Students of technical specialities avoid unemployment

The search for potential employees at the universities by business companies is constantly increasing. Last year students of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) received forty per cent more job suggestions as compared with those in 2012. According to the questionnaire’s data, more than fifty per cent of all students start working while studying.

"Defining good employment results, the main factors according to the students‘ opinion, are not only their personal features, but also work experience, studies at the university, social relations," - says Vilma Navikienė, Director of VGTU Integration and Career Office.

During Career Days, organised by VGTU, students have got their first possibility to meet future employers. Halfway of Career Days, more than two thousand students listened to thirty open lectures, met with business and entertainment world leaders, participated at the Fair for Career Contacts, imitating employment meetings and looking for practice or working place.

According to the data of Lithuanian Labour Exchange as of 2013, the graduates of Electronics, Fundamental Science, and Mechanics Faculties are the leaders in employment results at VGTU, with graduates of several study programms even reaching one hundred per cent of employment rate. Graduates of other specialities of the university are also wanted in the labour market: the employment of the graduates of Creative Industries Faculty is eighty nine per cent and that of Transport Engineering Faculty – ninety two per cent.

The cooperation between the university and business companies is further maintained and promoted: business people participate in the process of study programme creation and development, they deliver lectures, present topics for course and final papers, and take part in the student’s career formation process.

"Modern companies understand the importance of innovatory ideas for the development of their companies, generated by initiative and gifted specialists. That is the main reason why they actively participate in the process of education of skills, knowledge and career development of our students," - said V. Navikienė.
