VILNIUS TECH Faculty of Architecture kindly invites to the Open lecture " Urban Future in the Arab World: City Planning Lessons from Jordan " by assist. prof. Yasmein Okour on 28 April 12:00.
The lecture explores the evolving landscape of urban planning in the Arab world through the lens of Jordan’s dynamic planning experience. Positioned at the intersection of tradition, modernity, and regional turbulence, Jordan offers valuable lessons on managing rapid urbanization, resource scarcity, and shifting socio-economic contexts, and how national priorities and local realities interact to shape urban development. By highlighting both challenges and opportunities, the lecture invites a broader reflection on what the Jordanian case reveals about the future of Arab cities. The lecture also encourages European planners and students to engage with alternative planning narratives, recognizing the value of cross-regional learning and the potential for mutual insights between diverse urban contexts.
Yasmein OKOUR, PhD, is an assistant professor, Chair of Department of City Planning and Design in Jordan University of Science and Technology. Y. Okour researches Urban planning R&D frameworks and knowledge production in the Arab Region; Jordan's Municipal environmental planning processes and practices (focusing on urban resilience strategies in primary and secondary municipalities in Central and Northern Jordan).
