Architects, engineers, and builders around the world have long been looking for ways to reduce the cost of a project, to do this work faster and with better quality. Building Information Modelling (BIM) enables the achievement of these goals.

In order not only to work more efficiently but also to meet the ever-changing and increasing requirements of customers, digital information systems for modelling structures and related processes are increasingly gaining ground in the construction industry.

Developing information and communication technologies (ICT) is now widely applied in the construction sector as well. They have a significant impact on increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of this sector, improving the quality of production and services at all stages of the life cycle of buildings.

One such ICT technology is BIM, which appeared at the end of the last century and has rapidly become popular all over the world.

The most effective building decisions are now made in the early stages of planning and design, and BIM is considered one of the most promising recent developments in the construction industry.

Based on BIM, when designing a structure (building), an exact virtual prototype of it is created, also called a digital twin. This prototype is later used not only to present and develop the idea of the structure, but also during construction, installation, exploitation, maintenance, management, reconstruction, modernization, and sometimes even demolition and utilization of the structure.

The application of modern information technologies, digital construction principles, and BIM makes it possible to design, build, use, and manage structures more efficiently, as it provides opportunities to check in advance whether the design solutions are excellent and avoid design errors.

BIM helps to manage processes and make decisions. It is described as a technological tool, an effective method of work and cooperation, and an information centre.

BIM increases the productivity of the construction sector, ensures better quality of public buildings, and greater transparency of construction. In addition, this technology provides an opportunity to create a more sustainable environment that takes into account the problems of climate change and the need for a circular economy.

The creation and maintenance of such a model in the environment of complex information systems can be managed by specialists who are well versed not only in the design of structures, engineering networks, construction work technologies, construction organization, and economics, but also in modern information technologies (IT), information creation and exchange processes, and their application methods.

Specialists in this field will be trained through the interdisciplinary Static Information Modelling study programme. According to experts, the demand for highly qualified BIM specialists will significantly exceed their supply in the coming decade.

What will I be able to do?

The Building Information Modelling study programme is designed to learn:
Prepare and carry out the engineering digitisation of the construction project(s);
Apply digitisation tools and related techniques and technologies in design and construction processes;
Perform information modelling of design, construction, and building operation;
Collect, manage, and administer digital information;
Implement and maintain a common data management system;
Supervise the BIM project, monitor, analyze, and control it, assessing constantly changing conditions and situations;
Organize, maintain, and manage the information infrastructure of the company/project;
Advise and organize training on the practical application of information technology;
Prepare company/project CAD/BIM standards, requirements, and other BIM documents;
To help implement the company's digitalization process development strategy.

What would be my career options?

Work as a BIM coordinator of a structural integrated project in builders' (customers') organizations, design companies, co-builders, and special construction works contracting companies;
Work as a BIM project coordinator or BIM specialist in design companies;
work as a BIM construction project coordinator or BIM construction supervision specialist in contractor and subcontractor companies;
Work as a BIM maintenance specialist or BIM consultant in real estate developer, manager, builder (customer) companies;
Work as a BIM maintenance specialist or BIM consultant in public and private institutions, supervision of the execution of construction works, supervision of the execution of structural projects, and supervision of the use of structures;
Work as a BIM junior research specialist or BIM consultant in software development IT companies;
Work as a BIM modelling specialist in design companies that create architecture and/or structures, or/and engineering and construction management parts of civil projects;
To study for a master's degree;
To work in builders (customers) and investor companies, various profile design companies, construction contracting and subcontracting companies, state sector, certification, supervision, cadastre, and registry institutions.
