About department
Department of automation dates back to 1967, when KPI branch of technical computing and department of mathematics parted with department of electrical equipment. Department of electrical equipment was founded in 1967 November 18 by 564th order of Lithuanian higher and secondary specialised education minister.
After the establishment in 1969 Vilnius institute of construction department of electrical equipment was renamed to department of electrical drives. In 1987 when the faculty became Kaunas institute of polytechnics Vilnius faculty the department of electrical drives was renamed to department of electrical equipment. In 1991 when the Vilnius technical university was established the faculty was returned to its composition and department of electrical equipment was renamed to department of automation.
The heads of the department was since its establishments were: in 1967-1968 temporary head of department of electrical equipment was M. Paulauskas. In 1968-1969 the head of department of drives was A.Smilgevičius. In 1979-1991 the head of department of electrical equipment was Č. Teišerskas. In 1991-1996 the head of department of automation was A. Dambrauskas. In 1996-2000 the head of department of automation was A. Smilgevičius. From 2000 06 13 the head of department of automation was prof. habil. dr. A. Poška. Since 2000 09 01 the head of automation is assoc. dr. Zita Savickienė.
The department of automation is preparing bachelors and masters in fields of automation. Department has 5 PhD students.
Evening form of training department has developed 985 industrial installations electric drives and automation specialists. The last release of evening section was in 1996. In 1988 first group of students entered to study full-time.
