Vilnius Gediminas Technical University aims to increase the university's contribution to sustainable development of society. The concept of Sustainable University Development reflects the position, mission and role of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in contributing to the creation of sustainability in the cultural community and the strengthening of responsibility to the environment, society and the region.
The University aims to contribute to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations, covering the areas of social environment improvement, economic development, environmental protection and cooperation. All UN Member States are committed to the 17 SDGs, and the first step towards this is the localisation of targets and implementation of indicators for each goal. This means that the SDGs and targets are consistently translated into global agreements, European, national and institutional strategic documents, which adapt the 17 SDGs to the national context and incorporate them into national legislation and strategic documents. Vilnius Gediminas Technical University also incorporates these objectives and goals into its strategy by developing a Sustainable University Development Concept:
