Student workshops: from organic materials to artificial intelligence
In the first weeks of September, the third year students of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) are taking part in workshops. From Dortmund to Vilnius, from the application of local organic material technologies to artificial intelligence, the study process at the Faculty of Architecture (FA) is extremely multi-layered.
This autumn, third-year students at the FA have the opportunity to participate in one of four workshops offering a variety of trainings, seminars, and the opportunity to try out contemporary tools and different contexts. They also include open lectures and planned public presentations of the results. Participation in the workshops is an integral part of the study process for third-year students.
Under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liutauras Nekrošius (FA) and Christiane Fülscher (Dortmund), some of the students travelled to Dortmund for a joint workshop between VILNIUS TECH, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund and the Brno University of Technology. During the workshop, students from Lithuania, Germany and the Czech Republic are looking for solutions to open up one of the schools in Dortmund to the local community.
The next joint workshop takes place in Vilnius. "Architecture foundation" together with VILNIUS TECH and Vilnius Academy of Arts organise the workshop "Altering matter", exploring circular design and organic materials (VILNIUS TECH curators lect. Gabrielė Šarkauskienė and lect. Antanas Šarkauskas). The workshop participants explore the possibilities of circular design in architecture - from learning about organic materials and developing practices (e.g. reed roofs) to finding solutions for the decaying greenhouses of the botanical garden, which are in need of renovation.
Organic materials and sustainability aspects are also explored in the workshop "Let's Courtyard" in the FA courtyard, joined by FA Alumni Aistė Gaidilionytė and Kamilė Vasiliauskaitė. The workshop explores the theme of public spaces, experimenting with the greening of the courtyard and trying to enhance its authenticity, openness and attractiveness not only for the university community but also for the city's residents.
FA Alumni also joined the "Vilnius Symphony" workshop at the LinkMenų Factory. Reda Petravičiūtė teaches third-year students how to apply artificial intelligence in architecture. The students are spending these weeks analysing the perception of the city's soundscape using a variety of data and artificial intelligence. The series of open lectures during all workshops continues this week and workshop presentations are planned:
