Dr. Hüseyin Emre Ilgın: "Tallest Timber Buildings: What are the Main Architectural and Structural Design Considerations?"

"In the modern era, wood has mostly been used in low-rise and auxiliary structures while steel and concrete replace wood in larger and load-bearing structures. However, engineers now need to consider environmental factors and can benefit from advances in engineering sciences and construction technologies that allow the wood to be used in more building components than was ever dreamed of in days gone by. Taking these two developments together, engineers have a greater motivation to design and construct wooden buildings that are larger and taller than ever before. In recent years, many countries around the world have witnessed an accelerating trend in the construction of tall timber towers (≥9-story) using engineered timber products. In this context, this presentation analyses the main architectural and structural design concerns to develop an understanding of the contemporary trends of tallest timber buildings with their potential, benefits, challenges, and prospects."

Dr. Hüseyin Emre Ilgın received his Ph.D. (2018) on tall building design in the Department of Architecture from METU, Ankara. In his more than 15 years of professional life, he worked in the architectural design and construction sector, mainly in the design and site supervision of healthcare facility projects, including city hospitals over one million square meters. During his 10 years of teaching experience, he has taught at various universities as a lecturer. Dr. Ilgın's more than 70 academic publications, more than 30 of which are on wooden construction. He started his postdoctoral career at Aalto University in 2018 and continued his career in wood construction at Tampere University. Dr. Ilgın is now working as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie research fellow on dovetail massive wood board elements at the same university. He has been giving seminars about his research project and the tallest timber buildings at many universities in Europe.
