Department originated from the very establishment of Lithuanian state University (1922) when statute of Lithuanian University was approved. The closest according to the area was department of bridges, which delivered lectures on masonry, and concrete bridges. Building structures and bridges were considered as one subject. Names of departments and subordination of concrete and masonry structures subjects varied with time. The first thesis from this area was defended in 1936. Department of concrete structures was established in 1944. When Civil engineering institute was founded in Vilnius, department of concrete structures as a separate unit was established in 1972, since 1998 it was named as department of concrete and masonry structures.
