ENERGY, CLUSTERS AND SOCIAL INNOVATIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SUMMER SCHOOL and CONFERENCE
Vilnius, September 5-7, 2016
The EU’s framework for state aid defines innovative clusters as follows: “Innovation clusters mean grouping of independent and innovative start-ups, small, medium and large undertakings as well as research organizations operating in a particular sector and region, and designed to stimulate innovative activity by promoting intensive interactions, sharing of facilities and exchange of knowledge and expertise, and by contributing effectively to technology transfer, networking and information dissemination among the undertakings in the cluster”.
From previous experience, innovation business-driven clusters have been evidenced to be a successful approach to establish and secure a long-term collaboration among different key actors in the RTI ecosystem: research organizations, academics, SMEs, companies, policy and decision makers and publics. Particularly, scattered research islands have been realized in different Mediterranean countries where these research bodies are working on the same thematic areas but separately at both local and regional. The interest is in the outcome of their research for solving industrial and societal challenges and for creating new businesses and public services. Moreover, clustering should facilitate cooperation between MPCs with similar European researchers and industries by highlighting the main factors contributing to innovation in strategic sectors in the EU-Mediterranean cooperation, leading to the enhancement of the industry competitiveness and hence the country’s economic growth.
Focusing on the GreenTech advanced methodology for research, the ClusDevMed project aims at strengthening the food, water and energy sectors in these specific contexts, because they are, as many scientific research has proved, the key factors for influencing socio-economic conditions of the related communities.
