Cooperation with world's leading universities and research centers is the key to the successful development and competitiveness of Lithuanian universities.
Founded in 1425, KU Leuven (Belgium) ranked 70th in the QS World University Rankings. KU Leuven received a particularly high score for the indicator 'citations per faculty', ranking 29th worldwide with a score of 96.6/100.
To start cooperation with KU Leuven, I have chosen the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility Program. This program provided an opportunity to present the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and my latest R&D projects:
Among those interested in the development of new projects based on the results of previous ones: the chair of Research Centre for Information Systems Engineering prof. Yves Wautelet, prof. Stephan Poelmans, and prof. Kristof De Witte. The possibilities of applying for European R&D grants and joint scientific publications were discussed.
But the current situation in the Easten Europe made its own adjustments: my new acquaintances were worried about the development of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the danger of destruction of nuclear power plants and the Russian threat of the use of nuclear weapons. Therefore, part of the time was devoted to talk about the degradation of post-Soviet authoritarian regimes, their accumulated arsenals of weapons, socio-economic and political problems (e.g., no mechanisms for peaceful transition of power), and how all this can be ignited.
Belgians support Ukraine, I noticed Ukrainian flags on some houses, cars and historical buildings. Advertising of charitable assistance to Ukrainians affected by Russian aggression can be seen on bus stops and billboards. Belgian ordinary people share the pain and suffering of the Ukrainian people and say: "Close the sky over Ukraine!".
