Sustainability and Circular Economy in the Agrifood Sector: From Concepts to Practice
This year, on November 5 (10:20–11:55, room S3 709) and November 6 (10:20–11:55, room S3 620), at the invitation of Dr Renata Korsakienė, Head of the Department of Management, Dr Maria Raquel Lucas, Associate Professor at the University of Évora and Researcher at MED (Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development) and CHANGE (Global Change and Sustainability Institute), Portugal, will deliver a lecture titled:
“Sustainability and Circular Economy in the Agrifood Sector: From Concepts to Practice.”
The lecture will be held in English.
During the session, the guest speaker will explore how sustainability principles and circular economy approaches are transforming business models and the agrifood sector. The lecture will address key sustainability challenges related to waste management and reduction, resource efficiency, value creation within food systems, and responsible production and consumption.
It will highlight:
- Innovative strategies and governance mechanisms – including examples from Portugal – that promote social, environmental, and economic sustainability;
- Pathways for transforming agrifood systems to ensure food security and environmental balance for future generations; and
- The importance of understanding core concepts, following coherent pathways, and effectively connecting research and teaching at the university level with real-world practice to foster meaningful management changes.
