VILNIUS 700 - We invite students to Explore Documentary Cinema!

Learning outcomes of the course unit:
Students will acquire a fully rounded and well-developed complex insight into documentary cinema and skills from a variety of areas: representational, filmmaking process, a practical approach to writing on certain subjects and assembling proposals, which will be achieved through undertaking practical exercises using simple as well as advanced tools.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:
Students are required to produce one short documentary film (1- 5 min) using mobile phones or digital cameras, using advanced technologies in editing and postproduction at VILNIUS TECH.
Course contents:
The course focuses on exploring documentary cinema through a broad range of artistic and rhetorical standpoints examining the representation of reality, from both a theoretical and empirical perspective.
Apart from screenings and subsequent reflections, the master course will include the making of 1 short documentary film by each of the participating students on the subject “VILNIUS 700”. Students will be able to use mobile phones, digital cameras, advanced cameras as well as new technologies equipment of VILNIUS TECH.
Each session consists of an introduction, a screening, and a discussion of selected films, organized either historically, or in accordance with considered modes of documentary filmmaking: poetical, methods of exposition, observational, interactive, reflective/reflexive, performance based. The last session will include subsequent screenings and discussion of all the student’s short documentary films “VILNIUS 700”.
Assessment methods and criteria:
One short documentary (1- 5 min) utilizing a mobile phone or a digital camera. Technical quality is not overly important as we will be exploring approaches and principles (30%), 1 page (printed A4 format) of the Synopsis (or 1-page printed concept) for a documentary (30%), attendance (40%).

Modes of representation (reality / fiction / gameplay); documentary modes; the relationship between various cinematic elements within documentary film, the use of logic within both narration/narrative and non-narrative forms, submission of the 1-page Synopsis (or 1 page of the concept) of the short documentary film.

Poetical mode + key historical approaches + screening of the feature documentary film “Decadent No. 2419”; + Consultation of the final Synopsis, pre-production of the documentary “VILNIUS 700”.

Poetical mode + contemporary examples + editing consultations.

Dramaturgy & Postproduction consultations with the instructor Saimir Bajo (3 hours consultations for the final editing, dramaturgy and postproduction of the documentaries ”Vilnius 700”).

Watching in big screen of VILNIUS TECH all finished short documentaries “VILNIUS 700”, Interactive mode + discussion; evaluations (3 hours).

Each student of the course will receive a certificate for having participated in the practical workshop and completed the documentary film making course.
