Knowledge of geodesy is required in various fields. It is a science that studies the shape, size, and gravitational field of the Earth, and determining the relative positions of points above, on, or beneath the earth’s surface. Geodetic measurements determine the position of points and forms the geodetic reference networks required for topographic maps and other land surveying, nationwide mapping, construction work, geodynamic surveys, state border marking and many other applications, where precise location of points, i. y. their spatial coordinates, are required. This science provides an opportunity to perform geodetic works with the required accuracy in a common system of geodetic coordinates. The collected geodetic data are analysed using geoinformation systems (GIS).

Aurelijus Deksnys, Head of the GIS Department of Vilnius Municipal Company “Vilniaus Planas”, comments on the application and relevance of GIS in urban development: “With the help of the surveyed data in GIS, we can perform various analyses, calculations, comparisons substantiating one or another decision. For example, to optimize the layout of new buildings and water resources and to introduce mandatory changes to reduce air and noise pollution. Nowadays anyone can use municipality GIS datasets to observe the development of the city, ongoing real estate development, public spaces and other projects. In addition, GIS allows integration and analysis of environmental data such as air, noise, solar radiation levels and the assessment of the environmental standard of living of the population. All the mentioned data are currently presented on the smart 3D map of Vilnius city managed by municipal company “Vilniaus Planas”. The map provides recommendations to the municipality on urban buildings and road planning, and publicly available data helps to visually present the vision of the future city not only to developers, but also to residents.”

GIS is used not only by architects, but also by other specialists - engineers, environmental data analysts, developers of agricultural information technologies. Majority of these specialists in Lithuania are trained by Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. In this way, urban institutions are provided with specialists who are able to intelligently plan, model and manage rural and urban engineering systems, integrate separate engineering systems, economically evaluate and justify rational solutions, using the datasets collected and created by surveyors.
