Study programmes
The Department of Roads offers bachelor's (1st cycle) and master's (2nd cycle) study programs for those seeking to acquire knowledge of civil engineering and knowledge about modern road, street, railway, airport and urban infrastructure planning; and design and timely application of construction and maintenance technologies. To acquire knowledge about the planning and design of a sustainable urban transport system and the application of maintenance and management technologies in the context of a smart city; be able to solve the problems of design, construction, maintenance, repair, reconstruction and traffic organization of roads and railways and traffic safety. To understand, analyze and refine traffic safety problems and to adopt conceptual and precise engineering solutions; able to intelligently plan, model and manage urban engineering systems; be able to think creatively and critically and maintain their professional competence acquired in research institutions and through lifelong learning.

Bachelor studies

ROAD, RAILWAY AND URBAN ENGINEERING

Awarded qualification degree - Bachelor of Engineering Sciences
Form and duration of studies - full-time studies (4 years)

Master studies

ROADS AND RAILWAYS

Goals of the study program
To prepare a master's degree in civil engineering with a second-cycle university education, who would be capable to solve the problems of road, rail and railway design, construction, maintenance, repair, reconstruction and traffic organization, as well as traffic safety. To economically evaluate and substantiate rational design, technological and maintenance solutions for roads and railways. The postgraduate will have skills to use modern information technologies and knowledge required for engineering and scientific activities; learning to communicate effectively with professionals in other fields and the public; able to think creatively and critically and to maintain their professional competence acquired in research institutions and through lifelong learning.

ROAD SAFETY MANAGEMENT

Goals of the study program
To prepare masters who can understand, analyze and refine traffic safety problems, make conceptual and accurate engineering solutions in the absence of information and taking into account the traffic situation on roads and streets. The postgraduates will able to design and maintain roads, streets and bridges to be safe, and to carry out public educational activities in the field of traffic safety, to be team leaders, to find and understand the latest trends in the field of safe roads and streets design and apply them in Lithuania.

URBAN ENGINEERING INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Goals of the study program
To prepare urban engineering specialists who are able to intelligently plan, model and manage urban engineering systems, integrate individual urban engineering systems, be able to think creatively and critically and use modern information systems. In addition, to apply scientific and technological innovations in solving urban engineering problems, economically evaluate and justify rational solutions.

INNOVATIVE ROAD AND BRIDGE ENGINEERING

Goals of the study program
To prepare masters of civil engineering, able to understand, investigate, analyze and solve problems of designing, construction and maintenance of modern roads and bridges. The have effectively integrate and apply advanced theories of road economy management gained at VGTU and RTU in Lithuanian, Latvian or other foreign companies as well innovative knowledge of road and bridge engineering science and practice, formulating and evaluating decisions of road maintenance and development, based on scientific reasoning, systemic, critical and constructive thinking.

Innovative Road and Bridge Engineering is a joint master's degree program carried out in conjunction with the Riga Technical University. The graduates are awarded with diplomas of both universities.

The Club of Young Road Engineers
“Kelelis“ – The Club of Young Road Engineers

Young road engineers, students of road and railway engineering founded the club „Kelelis“ in 2004. The heads of production, roads and railway companies, organizations, VGTU Faculty of Environmental Engineering and the Department of Roads also supported this initiative. The main goal of the club is to unite young road workers for software and specific ideas, to help them integrate into manufacturing, road construction-related companies, to be interested in the latest technologies in car and railway design, research, construction, repair, maintenance, traffic safety, environmental protection and to follow application of these technologies in Lithuania.
The Club young road engineers maintains close relations with companies, associations and clubs, organizes annual Vilnius Gediminas Technical University student road and railway holidays, takes care of organizing student internships in road design, research, construction, maintenance companies and organizes club member camps.

The inaugural meeting of the Young Road Engineers club "Kelelis" took place in 8 March 8, 2004. It is symbolic that the first meeting took place at the Lithuanian Road Museum. The members of club decided to establish the young road engineers club “Kelelis” and to approve the regulations of a club at the inaugural meeting. VGTU road students L. Jukneviciute, S. Juskeviciute, L. Kniukstaite, A. Maciulis, J. Pavilionyte, K. Ratkeviciute, J. Sarpyte, V. Vorobjovas and A. Vaitkus were elected to the club council. The council elected the first president of the club A. Vaitkus. The representatives of "Kelelis" joined the traditional tree planting festival organized by the road veterans' club "Kelininkas", which took place at the Mijaugoniai intersection on the Vilnius-Kaunas road in 23 April 2004.

A little later, the club's attributes were created, a symbol, a flag and a badge. Articles about the establishment of the club and its activities were published in the magazine “Lietuvos keliai” and in the newspaper “Inzinerija” of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University.

The club regularly organizes study trips to Lithuanian road companies, Siauliai Region Roads, Alytus Region Roads, Marijampole Region Roads, Klaipeda Region Roads, Biseris, Lemminkainen Lietuva, Vilnius Locomotive Repair Depot and many others. In addition, the most interesting Lithuanian transport buildings are visited every year and their reconstruction works are inspected.
