Department of Biomechanical Engineering

The Department of Biomechanical Engineering conducts research on the measurement of human motion and biosignals, and analyzes and models biocompatible materials. The department focuses on research related to the adaptation of the environment for people with disabilities, the development of therapeutic methods for motor disorders, the design of intelligent biomechatronic devices (exoskeletons, rehabilitative robotics and active limb prostheses).
The department is currently contributing to one of the largest projects underway with Santaros Clinics in Vilnius to develop technology for measuring and analyzing biological feedback. The department also currently has five doctoral students who are doing research on heart, bone and muscle measurements and evaluation.

History

The roots of the Department of Biomechanical Engineering date back to 1993 when the Faculty of Mechanics started to train specialists in the field of biomechanics. The separate Department of Biomechanics was established in 1996. Until 2001, it was headed by Assoc Prof Dr Juozas Vincas Astrauskas, and between 2001 and 2007 by Prof Dr Habil Mečislovas Mariūnas. Since 2007, the head of the department is Assoc Prof Dr Julius Griškevičius.
In 2017, the name of the department was changed, and it is now called the Department of Biomechanical Engineering.
