About department
In the Department of Building Structures established over a forty years ago currently are working 8 employees, 6 of which are teachers.Another 3 teachers are working on cooperation basis in the department. Among the teachers working in the department include professor, four docents, three lecturers and assistant. Department professor Doc. Dr. V. J. Stauskis became the National Science Prize laureate in 2002. Specialization of staff in the department are architects, engineers, designers and building physics professionals.
Department of Building Structures provides Faculty of Architecture undergraduate students with a basic knowledge of building construction,computer-aided design and building physics. Building structures are taught to Faculty of Environmental Engineering full-time and part-timestudents specialities as well. Faculty of Civil Engineering students are provided with building partitioning physics knowledge.
Department of Building Structures supervises the renovation of buildings specialization - the second cycle (master's degree) program"Architecture" since 1994.
Department of Building Constructions was established on October 1st, 1971. The historical roots of the Department go back to 1922, when Kaunas University was founded, and the subject of building constructions lectured at the Technical Faculty. Later names of both Kaunas University and the Department changed. However, the core of the professors of newly formed Department in 1971 would be the ones of the Kaunas University. The first to start working under the guidance of Prof. V. Kriščiūnas were: Algimantas Nakas, Česlovas Ignatavičius, Arnoldas Radzivonas, Bernardas Žintelis, Nisonas Geršas, Vytautas Strigūnas, Leonas Guokas, Michailas Prikšaitis, Mečislovas Urbelis. The Department was settled in the then Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute on the sixth floor of the central building.

Building Construction Department staff in 1986
Shortly architect Elena Nijolė Bučiūtė joined the team of the Department. In that period she designed the National Opera and Ballet Theatre house. A bit later Gendrikas Likas and Vytautas Jonas Stauskis joined up. In 1976, when Ass. Prof. Dr. Algimantas Nakas became the head of Department, the Department moved into newly built laboratory block. Eventually some of the professors and employees have changed and new staff joined up: Birutė Ambraziūnaitė, Elena Brundzaitė, Gintaris Cinelis, Julius Gajauskas, Rimidijus Pikutis, Vytautas Vaitkus and others.
The highest number of regular professors – 15 – was from 1979 till 1988, 22 – the total number of employees was in 1983. After restoration of independence of Lithuania the changes in the Department were conditioned by changes of the studio programs when the institute became an institution of university education. Number of professors in the department decreased, but the scientific work improved significantly. From 1986 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Česlovas Ignatavičius was the head of Department, from 1996 – Habil. Dr. Prof. Josifas Parasonis, from 2000 – Habil. Dr. Prof. Vytautas Jonas Stauskis, since 2009 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marius Mickaitis is the head of the Department.
