Digital Communication
The research group “Digital communication” promotes research on the Internet enabled society and reflects Lithuanian Smart specialisation priority “Inclusive and creative society”, which highlights the impact of ICT technologies on social progress. Lithuania has exemplary preconditions to become digital networked society: high quality infrastructure, high level of Internet accessibility, early adopters’ culture.
The new ICT paradigm, mobile communication, social media, Internet of Things and cloud computing, increasingly put the end user at the center of innovation processes, thus shifting the emphasis from technologies to people. The success stories of services such as Google, Wikipedia, and Facebook rely on their users to create value with Internet 2.0 tools. The development in the field of Civic Tech is influenced by the innovations in 3 fields: growing connectivity through ICT, open data movement and diversity in digital collaboration forms. The massive participants’ inclusion into the interactions online ensures emergence of the greater intellectual capabilities, open data increases the visibility and faster identification of societal problems, new collaboration and knowledge aggregation methods enable self-organization and collective decision-making. However, the enthusiasms and optimism regarding the efficiency of Civic Tech activities and their influence on public good is supported only with fragmented research results. The majority of scientific activities are oriented towards governmental initiatives and integration of e-participation, e-democracy and open data tools. Because of the diversity in technological tools and information channels, the users of civic platforms face in praxis the problems with coordination, collective decision making and opinion structuring, security and privacy, information credibility, content quality and other problems. Key research areas of the group: collective intelligence, social innovations, virtual knowledge, immersive and interactive multimedia contents, digital business, smart cities, big data and real time response, social analytics. |
