Department of Information Systems
Department of Information Systems carries out the research on the topics of information system design, security insurance, application of artificial intelligence in information systems and related areas, participates in interdisciplinary research related to mechanics and other areas, performs doctoral studies in the Informatics Engineering science field, cooperates with Lithuanian and international research institutions and business companies, carries out bachelor (Software engineering; Information systems) and master level (Information and Information Technologies Security; Information Systems Software Engineering) study programs, gives courses on informatics to the students of other Vilnius Tech faculties. The Department’s academic staff is composed both of full-time scientists working at universities, as well as high level specialists from the IT industry.
History
- The predecessor of the Department of Information Systems was established in 1987. In these days the general informatics course was called in many names – technics of calculation, computing machinery and programming, information technology. The biggest enthusiast and promoter of this course was Prof. Daumantas Maciulevičius. He was the head of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics Department and made a lot of effort to bring the lecturers of this discipline together.
- After the reorganization of the Applied Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering department the Department of Informatics was established. It belonged to the Faculty of Mechanical technology. The first head of the department was Assoc. Prof. Algis Saulis. Teachers who taught students basics of IT were transferred into the new department. The direction of scientific research was not formulated at that time and scientific interests of many teachers were closely related to the topics of the faculty. The Lectures and the head of the Department were thinking about new IT specialty in University. In order to achieve this objective experts from the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of Academy of Science were invited.
- In 1993 with the establishment of Faculty of Fundamental Sciences, the Department was renamed as Department of Engineering Informatics. In the same year the department started to prepare students in engineering informatics: bachelors of engineering informatics as well as master level students. Since 1998 the head of Department was Prof. Dr. Habil Petras Gailutis Adomėnas.
- In 1999 the Department of Engineering Informatics was split into two departments: Department of Information systems and Department of Information technology. The main reason was the increasing number of students, interested in IT studies.
- In 2000 several specialization directions for Engineering Informatics students were introduced. Department introduced the Information Systems specialization for students, intending to be information systems analysts, designers and administrators. Later studies could be continued in master level program Information Systems, as well supervised by the Department of Information Systems.
- In 2006 the Department of Information Systems started one more master level program, called Information systems software engineering, which was approved by Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education (SKVC).
- In Prof. Dr. Dalius Mažeika became the head of department. Two new bachelor study programs were introduced: Software Engineering and Information Systems. Software Engineering program is currently one of the most popular study programs both at Vilnius Tech and in Lithuania. Also, starting from 2011 the new master level program Information and IT Security was started, which is taught both in Lithuanian and English languages.
- In 2021 Assoc. Prof. Nikolaj Goranin became the new head of department.
