Department of Information Technologies
History
In 1992 the Master programme in Engineering Informatics was established. When in 1993 the Faculty of Fundamental Sciences was created the Department of Informatics was incorporated into the new formation from another faculty and renamed the Department of Engineering Informatics. The same year the bachelor programme in Engineering Informatics was started. In 1999 the department was split into the departments of Information Systems and Information Technologies, the move caused mainly by a greatly increased number of informatics students.
The Department of Information Technologies manages two bachelor level study programmes: Engineering Informatics and Information Technology Service Management. The latter has been created with the cooperation of the IBM services division. The department also manages two Master study programmes: Information Technologies and Information Technology Management.
Currently the Department of Information Technologies has about 30 employees. Over 100 students gain Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees every year. Engineering Informatics study programme is in the first place by graduates’ number in Lithuania. The department collaborates closely with industry representatives: distinguished business persons giver presentations and discuss improvements in the study programmes. The programme of Engineering Informatics has been recognized by employers as one of the IT study programmes best meeting industry needs (hyperlink). The department also actively conducts research. The department took the first place among all faculty department in 2016 for the number of publications in ISI Web of Science journals with Impact Factor. The department is proud of the achievements by its students. The absolute majority of our graduates work in IT fields requiring high qualifications. Many graduates already lead projects or companies. Our students actively participate in international competitions; we regularly take part in the World Student Programming Championships ACM ICPC (hyperlink). In 2016, Julija Semenenko, a student of Engineering Informatics, participated in a NASA internship as only one of the three students from Lithuania selected (hyperlink).
The head of the departament: assoc. professor Dmitrij Šešok.
