About lecture: some of the most pressing challenges we face in industry and policy challenges could be solved if people transformed some aspects of their behaviours (think for example about domestic violence, corruption or driving behaviours). Transforming the social norms that people hold has been shown to have a great potential to achieve such changes around the world. Such experiences show how, rather than forcing or tricking people into change, strategies that create collective reflection and action around social expectations can be much more effective and durable. Drawing on my own research and professional experience, I will explain why we need to inspire behavioural and social norm transformations to tackle industry and policy challenges, why leveraging social norms can be a good way to do it, what practical techniques can be used to better understand and change the behaviour of people, and how different experiences around the world have been successful to create lasting change.
