About department
The purpose of Department – to develop specialists of high-level railway transport with enough basic knowledge of specialty and able to adapt to the future of their practical work.
The mission of Department – to foster academic values, form the community of teachers, students and the social partners and to maximize the academic performance of giving meaning to the university, national and global level.
Department of Railway Transport organized three-tier professionals: bachelors, masters and doctoral students.
The Transport Engineering (Bachelor Degree Studies) program aims are to develop a specialist who graduated from the program can: demonstrate knowledge and understanding, supplemented by fundamental science knowledge and specific knowledge about the latest scientific achievements in transport engineering; apply knowledge and understanding, and demonstrate a professional approach to the job or profession, to formulate and reasonably base decisions on the transport engineering problems; collect and interpret data necessary for important social, scientific and ethical audiences; have enough trained self-learning skills necessary to continue studies in another step. Students of Railway Transport Engineering specialization understand general tendencies of cohesive development of railway transport system, fuel economy, rational use of resources and solutions of ecological problems, general organization and management of production, repair and technical maintenance of railway rolling-stock, organization of technical maintenance and repair of locomotives’ mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical equipment, exploitation of rolling-stock, formation of train units, selection of traction rolling-stock, acceptance and release of the train units, permeability assessment, aspects of railway automation and remote control use in ensuring traffic safety. Knowledge provided of Railway Transport Engineering specialization complex approach to the railway system is formed for students, allows creating the principal, structural, functional schemes of elements projected, enables the calculation of technical-economic parameters in designing technical measures and their components.
The Transport Engineering (Master Degree Studies) program provide the newest special knowledge in Technological Science in the area of studies of Land Transport Engineering, develop special skills of problem solution required for carrying out the research as well as managerial skills and an innovatory approach to apply them to technological problems' solution. Students of Railway Transport Engineering specialization understand the peculiarities of the structure of railway technological systems and the interaction of their elements; understand the patterns of the physical processes, the change dynamics of those patterns; understand physical processes in a technological system and to evaluate the impact of the structure elements of those processes on functionality, are able to apply scientific research methods, innovations for new technological systems.
Railway Transport Engineering specialization graduates employ in one of the country's largest company AB "Lietuvos geležinkeliai" departments, other private and public companies, which operate railway rolling stock and the design technological devices. Rail transport engineering specialization graduate usually in their workplace organizing and controlling rolling stock maintenance and repair, are responsible for employee safety and health requirements. A significant part of transportation engineering master's degree graduates have good recommendations and successfully employ in AB “Lietuvos geležinkeliai” general directorate, rolling stock service and technical development departments, and continue climbing the career ladder. Rail transport engineering specialization graduates may also work not only in railway profile companies which operate vehicles.
The most gifted graduates may continue studies in transport engineering branch of science post-graduate studies (PhD studies).
The Department of Railway Transport was established on 1 of September 1, 1994. The head and an organizer of the Department till 2013 year was Prof Dr Habil Leonas Povilas Lingaitis.
From September of 2013 Assoc Prof Dr Gediminas Vaičiūnas became Head of the Department.
The Department was established for great need of railway transport specialists in post-soviet Lithuania. It is well-known that railway engineers with higher education have not been educated in Lithuania for about 50 years. They were sent from Moscow, Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) or Belarus. When Lithuania regained Independence, most of these specialists went back to their native countries of former Soviet Union.
Over twenty-one years of its existence the Department released 608 bachelors, 32 diploma engineers and 235 Masters of science as well as 5 Doctors of technical sciences.
