    Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering

    Module aim

    General knowledge on physical and mechanical properties of soil basement, their determination principles, that of their variation per time, that of application for general geotechnical problems: strength and stability of foundations, pressure to retaining walls, stability of slopes. General knowledge about design of various types of foundations: design requirements, rational types of foundations, ground basement and dimensions calculations.

    Module description

    Soil description and classification. Physical and mechanical properties of soils. Water in soils. Total, effective stresses and pore pressure. Strains and stresses in basement. Methods for determining of settlements of foundations. Strength and stability of basement. Pressure to retaining walls. Stability of slopes. Design principles in foundation engineering. Shallow foundations: types, design, execution technology. Pile foundations: design, execution technology, quality evaluation. Deep foundations. Underpinning of foundations. Artificial basements. Environmental problems in geotechnical engineering.
    Students must attend at least 80 percent of lectures and exercises as scheduled.
    Students are required to complete all scheduled laboratory work.

    Materials Science and Building Materials

    Module aim

    Introduce students to products manufactured for building construction, introduce them to their structure, production principles and properties, as well as an understanding of the main methods used to study products and the ability to apply these products in construction according to their purpose.

    Module description

    Loads of various purpose products are used in building construction, each of them made from different raw materials using specific manufacturing processes. Produced products are characterized by unique properties. These properties are determined using standardized and reliable methods. Considering all of this: product properties, purpose, end-user’s expectations, building materials are used for various purpose building construction and good health creation. Obtained knowledge and skills will help to not get lost in the vastness of available information and make reliable decisions when working in the building industry. Students are required to complete all scheduled laboratory work. Theoretical lectures are mandatory for first-cycle I-III year full-time students. More than half of the lectures must be attended during the semester.

    Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics

    Module aim

    To introduce basics of probability theory and mathematical statistics, to train a student to use obtained knowledge for solving of real world problems.

    Module description

    The basic probability theory concepts and theorems. The distribution functions of random variables and numerical characteristics. The problems of mathematical statistics. Empirical characteristics. The point and interval estimates of unknown parameters. Statistical hypothesis testing, elements of correlation theory, regression.

    Students must attend at least 60% of the time scheduled practical works, 80% of the time scheduled laboratory works (full-time studies and part-time, distance learning studies) and 50% of the lectures (only full-time studies).

    Organisation of Technology Process

    Module aim

    To introduce students with production technologies of construction products, classification of production processes, organization of the production process.

    Module description

    Certain production technological operations are used in the production of construction products. These operations can be typical, found in many production technologies, or they can be atypical, characteristic only for a certain production. The subject contains a classification of production processes. It is about the principles of the organization of the production process. The fundamentals of the design of the production technologies and the processes taking place in them are examined. It is about the organization of production of construction products and the tasks and goals of the manufacturing company.

    Chemistry of Building Materials

    Module aim

    Ability to understand the structure of inorganic and organic compounds and chemical processes when solving issues related to the production and use of construction materials, and to apply theoretical knowledge in practice.

    Module description

    The rational use of materials in construction is based on chemistry. It’s the synthesis of theory and practice that helps understand the chemical structure of construction materials and raw materials, explaining chemical phenomena and processes in the manufacturing and use of construction materials and products. The subject also includes a broader understanding of the types and composition of construction materials, mechanisms of chemical reactions, and physicochemical transformations during production and use. Students are required to participate in no less than 70 percent of the practical sessions as scheduled.

    Module aim

    To provide knowledge about the main technological processes, their characteristics and their fire safety.

    Module description

    The subject is designed to examine various concretes and reinforced concrete, their characteristics and their use. The properties of concrete mixtures and their determination methods are analyzed in detail. Technologies for forming concrete and reinforced concrete products are analyzed.

    Quality Control of Construction Products

    Module aim

    To introduce with the used construction product quality control system and its components.

    Module description

    In construction, countless different construction products are used. They are all produced using different raw materials using different technological processes. Each manufactured product has its own quality characteristics, which are presented in regulatory documents. This subject discusses the main regulatory documents for construction products and presents the main qualitative characteristics that are determined by standardized test methods. It discusses how the quality control of the products used in construction is carried out during production and during presentation to the consumer, as well as what information the buyer of the product receives together with the product.

    Technological Processes and Equipment in the Production for Construction Products (with Course Work)

    Module aim

    After completing this course, students will be able to analyze, develop manufacturing technologies for construction products and select equipment based on empirical knowledge and research.

    Module description

    In the production of various construction products, technological processes take place during production, from the delivery of raw materials to the factory to the storage of the manufactured product. The main technological processes are divided into: mechanical, hydromechanical, thermal and mass exchange processes according to the regularities defining the process. Thus, the course examines technological processes and equipment for them.

    Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures

    Module aim

    Provide knowledge about the design methods of reinforced concrete and masonry structures, to develop design skills in structural members and engineering expertise.

    Module description

    Physical-mechanical properties of concrete, reinforcement, masonry; prestressed concrete members; carrying capacity and stiffness of flexural, compressed, tensioned reinforced concrete and masonry members.
    Students are required to attend at least 70 percent of lectures to the schedule.
    Students are required to complete all scheduled laboratory work.

    To develop an advanced understanding and knowledge of the behaviour and design of steel and timber structures and their connection systems.

    Module description

    Capacity to of knowledge about the steel and wood as a building material, timber and steel in construction, limit state design, steel and timber joints, types of connections, steel and timber construction, frames, arches, trusses, domes, their types and calculations.
    Students are required to complete all the laboratory activities scheduled.

    Module aim

    To acquire knowledge about modernization, repair and reconstruction of buildings, energy efficiency of buildings, ability to apply knowledge in practical activities.

    Module description

    This course introduces students to the implementation of the modernisation process and the elements of a modernisation investment plan, as well as the assessment of the energy performance of a building. Topics covered include the concept of building repair and reconstruction, energy efficiency solutions for building retrofitting, building repair and reconstruction techniques for retrofitting. The subject develops competent communication and cooperation with the participants in the building modernisation process, analysis and comparison of alternative solutions, justification of the rationality of the decision taken.
    Students must attend at least 80% of practical works at the scheduled time.

    Construction and Real Estate Finance and Investments (with Course Work)

    Module aim

    The aim of the subject is to enable students to properly select the types of construction and real estate investments, to comprehensively solve investment tasks according to financial and economic evaluation methods, to critically evaluate the results of financial investment activities.

    Module description

    The study subject introduces the theory and practice of construction and real estate investment. The concept of investments and types of investments are presented. The capital investment decision-making process, capital structure decisions, construction and real estate investment financing methods and sources are examined. Financial and economic methods of evaluating investment efficiency are presented and applied. The main types of investment in real estate and the features of these investments, investment strategies are introduced. Practical tasks of investment evaluation are solved.
    Students must attend at least 70% of practical works at the scheduled time.

    Module aim

    To provide knowledge about effective construction organization and management, develop the ability to apply gained knowledge in daily professional activities.

    Module description

    Students acquire knowledge about effective construction organization and management, the influence of technical progress on construction management, legal regulation of construction, principles of technological documentation, the organization of construction design, the principles of calendar and network scheduling, the method of streamline construction, the specialization and consistency of construction works, drawing up project of construction organization, engineering site preparation, supplying construction with resources, construction mechanization and management. Detailed solutions on efficient preparation of construction site and safety assurance of workers assessed. In the context of efficient construction organization solutions, the general principles of project planning, construction quality management and the basics of the organization of construction companies and their work planning are discussed.
    Students must attend at least 60% of practical works at the scheduled time.

    The module introduces and acquaints students with the real estate development industry – the process, players and various phases. Module content: real estate development process, developers and their partners, real estate finance, ideas, planning and analysis: public roles and market perspective, negotiation and formal commitment, construction, completion, opening, management, marketing and sales.
    Students must attend at least 80% of practical works at the scheduled time.

    Basics of Facilities Management

    Module aim

    The purpose of the subject is to acquaint students with the importance and benefits of the facilities management subject and relate it to the specifics and needs of the facilities management sector, to provide thinking and practical work skills for the subject.

    Module description

    The study subject introduces students with the goals and tasks of facilities management, the planning process, and facilities management activities of maintenance and service organizations, principles of building operation organization in European countries and new technologies and concepts in the field of facilities management. A project-based learning method is used to develop practical skills. Students, working in groups, perform tasks, present the completed works to each other and evaluate them.
    Students must attend at least 80% of practical works at the scheduled time.

Students must attend all of the time scheduled laboratory work. If the student completed at least 80 percent of the laboratory work during the semester, he is given the opportunity to complete the remaining laboratory work (one lab work – once). Theoretical lectures are mandatory for first-cycle I and II year full-time students. More than half of the lectures must be attended during the semester.

    Module aim

    Providing information on construction technology and developing skills of practical application of the acquired knowledge.

    Module description

    During lectures the following topics are analysed: rational ways of design of construction technology of a building, engineering development of a building place, construction principles of building foundation. Students are introduced to construction of underground and semi-underground buildings, brick and prefab construction technology, ways and technologies of monolithic construction, ways and technologies of prefab monolithic construction, industrial construction, technology of broad-nave buildings.
    Students must attend at least 70% of practical works at the scheduled time.

    Construction Economics

    Module aim

    The aim of the course – to introduce the students to the theory and analysis methods of construction economics, and to provide the analytical and practical work skills necessary to analyze the construction projects from an economic point of view.

    Module description

    The course introduces construction economics in the context of macro- and microenvironment. It includes topics on the characteristics of the construction sector, the significance of construction in the national economic system, construction projects’ influencing factors, construction market features, demand and supply, pricing and construction financing methods, international construction development trends, and construction economics in the context of sustainable development. The theory and methodology of the subject are mastered during lectures, by studying professional literature and interactive sources, discussions, and solving practical tasks. Special and general skills are developed during students’ homework, which includes the generation of ideas for construction projects, selection of a plot of land and a building project, cost estimates of construction, and calculation of the selling price and profit.
    Students must attend at least 70% of practical works at the scheduled time.

    Module aim

    The aim of the course is to introduce strategic management and marketing as a field of management, importance and value, and to relate this to the specific demands and constraints of the construction sector, provide students with knowledge and understanding of the subject.

    Module description

    The module defines strategic management and marketing in the context and coverage of the construction sector. Introduces strategic management and marketing, need for a strategy in construction, strategic analysis of external and internal environment, marketing and promotional strategies in construction, alternatives of strategic decisions, decision making, planning and implementation, managing strategic change. The group project takes the form of a strategic and marketing management plan of a construction company.
    Students must attend at least 70% of practical works at the scheduled time.
