INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Degree Master of Engineering Sciences
Length 2 years (4 semesters)
Study language Lithuanian
Start 1st of September
Entry Qualification To this programme applicants are accepted from the field of Production and Manufacturing Engineering.

Hybrid learning approach is applied in this study programme. Hybrid learning is an educational model where some students attend class in-person, while others join the class virtually from home.

A scooter „Vespa“, computer „Apple Mac“, player „iPod“ – these are globally known examples of industrial design which the experts have repeatedly rated as the best works in this category.

Industrial design means products intended for mass production, in other words – for the mass consumption, and designers of this field seek to create not only practical, popular and desired, but also exceptionally looking objects of the Environment-of-Things.

Applied design can be expressed in different aims: wishes for decorative luxury, for example, jewellery articles; unique functional services, such as interior design of the buildings or design of household objects; consumer goods of industrial design of mass production. There are no impossible tasks for contemporary designers.

Most often products of design are aesthetically attractive works based on conceptual ideas and innovative solutions, therefore engineers-designers are always seeking to make their works differ from the products already available on the market and each time they want to look at them newly. During the master study programme of industrial design efforts are made to answer newly to the questions: Why? How? What?

Why is the object such as it is? How to find a personal link with things and their forms? What methods and tools can be used to create the things?

A famous design critic Lucas Verweij was of the opinion that the end product of the design can also be a service, system or even a procedure, therefore today the design is more a way of thinking than a profession.

Industrial design is an interdisciplinary master study programme of the practical nature connecting complex studies of production, technical aesthetics and art. Successful creative industrial design examples of the Design Department show the increasingly vanishing boundaries between different areas of activity – design, art, science, business and innovations, therefore it is necessary to develop the study programme in the disciplinary field.

Efforts are made to provide students of the programme with latest specialized knowledge from the fields of production engineering and arts (industrial design).

This knowledge is used for research, competent, independently and critically thinking production engineering, and design specialists are developed professionally and based on science.

Such specialists are able to apply research methods and innovative technologies in practice. They develop high quality products of mass production and apply knowledge of engineering sciences and art by clearly understanding their importance for the development of the society.

What will I be able to do?

The master study programme in the field of industrial design is designed to gain the following knowledge and skills:

  • reliability theories of production systems, laws, application of computation methods in the activity of industrial design of production engineering;
  • understand principles of the development of the society and the needs for the good quality required to achieve the goals of production engineering activity and develop erudition and philosophical outlook;
  • principles of functioning of technological equipment and constructions;
  • basics of mass design of an industrial product, production technologies;
  • production planning, organization and management of industrial enterprises and human resources;
  • methods of industrial marketing, reliability and experimental research of technological equipment;
  • aesthetic principles of the formation and artistic development of the objects of the Environment-of-Things, of laws of description, rules and application in the industrial design activity of production engineer;
  • Carry out research while developing innovation projects, resolving production engineering and industrial design problems, apply laws of productive systems‘ credibility theory;
  • Investigate production engineering and industrial design development trends, analyse by applying innovative statistical research and diagnostic methods;
  • Perform critical-analytical review of scientific works, apply principles of the formation of scientific experimenting methods using progressive experience and modern tools (methods, models, software);
  • Analyse, assess, improve technological processes by applying qualitative and quantitative indicators, form conclusions, resolve engineering, aesthetics, design formation and artistic problems;
  • Design and perform works of artistic construction by applying contemporary software packages.
  • Assess, calculate and interpret scientific information and experimental research data obtained using different experimental research devices and methods;
  • Select methods and tools for measuring parameters of production systems, process data, submit properly the results, perform modelling and analysis of production systems by applying information technologies.

What would be my career opportunities?

  • Work in the areas of generating industrial design ideas, production, design and design policy formation and investigation of the need for products.
  • Work while implementing research-based tasks of combining engineering construction and artistic formation by addressing practical problems of mass production of things, this way making an impact on the development of contemporary culture.
  • Undertake doctoral studies.
