University History
1956-09-01
The beginning of the current Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) dates back to the establishment of the Vilnius Evening Department of the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (KPI) Evening Faculty.
1960-07-01
The KPI Vilnius Department was reorganized into the KPI Vilnius Evening Faculty. The faculty included the Departments of Construction, Electrical Engineering, and Applied Mechanics. Approximately 500 students studied there.
1961-07-06
The KPI Vilnius Evening Faculty was reorganized into the KPI Vilnius Branch. The branch established two faculties: Instrument Manufacturing and Mechanical Technology.
1962 m.
The KPI Vilnius Branch graduated its first class of engineers—78 specialists. In the same year, the Scientific Council and Library were established, and the Folk Dance Ensemble began its activities.
1962-09-01
The Construction Economics Faculty was established at the KPI Vilnius Branch.
1963 m.
The Department of Physical Education was established.
1963 m.
The Student Scientific Society was founded.
1964-03-08
The student choir was established and named "Gabija" in 1969.
1964 m. vasarą
The first student spring celebration was held in Aukštadvaris.
1968 m.
The wind orchestra was founded.
1968 m.
The Faculty of Urban Construction was established, now known as the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
1969-08-01
The KPI Vilnius Branch was reorganized into the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute (VISI), creating an independent higher technical school in Vilnius. At that time, the institute had 26 departments with 290 lecturers and 3,451 students.
1970-09-01
Teaching building No. 1 was opened in Saulėtekis.
1971-09-01
The VISI Faculty of Architecture began its operations.
1974 m.
Two student dormitories in “Niujorkas” were completed.
1974 m.
The vocal-instrumental ensemble “Hiperbolė” was formed.
1990-02-07
The first rector elections at VISI took place. Prof. Habil. Dr. Edmundas Kazimieras Zavadskas was elected rector.
1990-10-31
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania, the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute (VISI) became Vilnius Technical University (VTU).
1991-03-20
The statute of Vilnius Technical University (VTU) was adopted. Following the transformation of VISI into VTU, curricula and programs were revised, and new specialties and specializations were developed based on the Western study model. The Faculties of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Engineering Communications, Mechanics, and Electronics operated at the university.
1992-07-02
The VTU Statute was approved by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania.
1993 m.
The Aviation Institute was established to train aviation engineers, pilots, and flight control specialists. It was later renamed the Antanas Gustaitis Aviation Institute.
1993 m.
Two new faculties were established: Business Management and Fundamental Sciences.
1994 m.
The Faculty of Transport Engineering was established.
1991-01-13
Vilnius Technical University student Rolandas Jankauskas passed away.
1992 m.
The International Studies Center was established to admit international students and develop international activities.
1992-07-02
In 1992, Prof. Habil. Dr. Romualdas Ginevičius was elected rector of the university.
1994-05-05
The Student Representation (SA) of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University was established.
1996-08-22
The Government of the Republic of Lithuania decided to grant Vilnius Technical University the name of Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania, renaming it Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU).
1999 m.
The theatre studio “Palėpė” was established.
2010-11-06
The first VISI–VGTU Alumni Congress took place, bringing together graduates from all generations of the university.
2011-03-15
The Lithuanian Parliament approved the new VGTU statute. VGTU was reorganized from a state budgetary institution into a public institution.
2011-09-08
The VGTU Council elected Dr. Doc. Alfonsas Daniūnas as rector.
2012 m.
In 2008, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University became the first in Lithuania to create a Creative Industries program and established the Faculty of Creative Industries in 2012.
2015-12-03
The unique VGTU Creativity and Innovation Center “LinkMenų Fabrikas” opened its doors.
2016-12-28
Vilnius Gediminas Technical University celebrated its 60th anniversary and held the second VGTU Alumni Congress.
2020-09-01
Vilnius Gediminas Technical University updated its brand. Not only was the university logo refreshed, but while the full name—Vilnius Gediminas Technical University—remained, the abbreviation VILNIUS TECH replaced the former VGTU.
2021-10-20
The Senate elected Prof. Dr. Romualdas Kliukas as rector of VILNIUS TECH.

The Sustainability Center was established and formally registered.
2024 m.
The Lithuanian Maritime Academy became the 11th faculty of VILNIUS TECH.
