“Portal” Replica at Expo 2020 in Dubai (a.k.a. Baby Portal)

The futuristic and globally renowned Portal was showcased at the Lithuanian Pavilion during Expo 2020 in Dubai. While the original twin Portals remain in Vilnius and Lublin, the Expo featured a scaled-down version—a lighter and more compact replica of the iconic concrete installation. This smaller Portal was specifically designed to fit in an airplane and allow for easy assembly.

Representing Lithuania at a global exhibition of this magnitude posed unique challenges, even for Portal. From the start, the replica was envisioned as both lightweight and durable. The primary structure was crafted from extruded polystyrene foam, a material chosen for its ease of cutting, bonding, and shaping. Once the main forms and constructions were complete, the Baby Portal was coated with epoxy resin and fiberglass fabric, ensuring both a polished look and structural integrity. This approach allowed Portal to maintain its striking design and symbolic significance while adapting to the logistical demands of Expo 2020.
