We are pleased to announce that the international publisher Springer has released the monograph "Assessment of the Quality of Passenger Transportation by Train Using Multiple Criteria Decision Making Methods", prepared by two faculty researchers – Prof. Habil. Dr. Henrikas Sivilevičius (Transport and Logistics Competence Center) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lijana Maskeliūnaitė (Department of Mobile Machinery and Railway Transport). The monograph focuses on an important and relevant topic – the assessment and improvement of passenger train transportation quality. Passengers will choose trains only if the journey is comfortable, fast, and safe.
The monograph discusses the system for evaluating and improving the quality indicators of the railway passenger transportation process. Classical multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods are used to evaluate the quality of this process, along with newly developed methods – ARTIW-L, ARTIW-N, and IHAMCI. The long-term experience of one of the authors as the head of an international passenger train and knowledge of the passenger transportation process allowed for identifying the factors that most influence train travel quality.
The monograph presents a concept and a new approach, suggesting that train journey quality can be conveniently assessed using a single figure, i.e., a comprehensive quality index (CQI). The quality assessment methodology presented in the monograph can be applied to the evaluation of international and local trains, consisting of different types and classes of carriages, with varying services and prices. Based on the calculated train quality index, trains can be classified, in comparison to one another, according to the well-known hotel classification system, i.e., based on the number of stars.
The monograph is intended for researchers, employees involved in strategic decision-making regarding the development and quality improvement of transport companies that carry passengers by rail. The MCDM methods presented can also be applied by graduate and doctoral students.
