On March 25, the Activity Report 2013 of the University was presented at the Senate meeting of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU). The Report covered the survey of achievements in the fields of studies and science, its impact on the region and the development of the country, planned investment into infrastructure, and future perspectives.
Prof Dr Alfonsas Daniūnas, the Rector of VGTU, said: “The University faced a lot of challenges in 2013, but it dealt successfully with them. It is among the leaders in the country according to the number of state-funded study places allocated. The conclusions of an external audit conducted last year gave a favourable assessment of the University activities. In 2013, we, as an institution, did not lose our position that had been attained. It is highly relevant to strengthen this position through our common work in the future”.
In 2013, the VGTU Development Strategy for 2014–2020 was approved with the main objectives and tasks defined in the priority fields of study, science and innovation. The reform of the University subdivisions made in 2013 will allow to get better results and consolidate research activity in the faculties.
“Even 100 of study programmes were offered to students, quality of the distance education system was improved with seven university faculties having access to it now. The system of feedback was also undergoing improvement, and good mobility rates for both students and teachers were retained. The number of foreign partners increased during the discussed period, as well as the number of students from abroad in bachelor and master's study programmes, which means additional income for the University,” Prof Dr Alfonsas Daniūnas continued.
With a view to the future, VGTU will further try to be among the leading universities of Lithuania: the quality management system will be finally implemented, study programmes will be regularly revised and new ones will be established taking into account the emerging needs on the market and future forecasts. The nearest future foresees further improvements in the infrastructure of the University such as construction of the Linkmenų creative centre and the AGAI laboratory block, continuation of the Centre for Science, Study and Administration construction, finishing design projects for the IT centre. The year 2014 will have to deal with the preparation for the Structural Funds calls for proposals for a new period.
The Rector of VGTU said at the meeting: “Although the economics of Lithuania shows the signs of recovery, the situation in the higher education system is problematic due to the demographic problems and other conditions. The competition among higher education institutions has been growing and will further do so. Therefore we have to be realistic about the present situation. We have to intensify our scientific research, develop interdisciplinary research and be competitive with universities both in Lithuania and other European countries”.
