November 26, 2019

In November of 2019 Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) lecturer of the Faculty of Business Management Department of Business Technology and Entrepreneurship Giedrius Čyras did participate in international staff week and international Teaching forum.

The University of Clermont Auvergne is committed to developing a range of courses suitable for international students (double degrees) and to promote its research at the global level. These twin goals are supported by a University-wide policy involving schemes to consolidate the University's position globally through its participation in consortia in the framework of European programs, its active presence in university cooperation associations such as AUF, EUA, etc., and by its increasing participation in international research and cooperation projects.
The University of Clermont Auvergne has therefore been pursuing the two major policy goals set by Europe for 2014-2020 through the Erasmus + and Horizon 2020 programs since its creation. It heads up the Erasmus Intern Consortium at the Clermont site. As proof of its reputation, UCA has been included since 2014 in the international Shanghai ranking for its results in physics and, since 2015, in the Times Higher Education ranking as 193rd university worldwide for its international development.

The aim of the visit was teaching program quality improvement and new pedagogical practices of knowledge acquisition. Meetings were held with Professors Cecilia Brassier and Pascal Brassier. The professors discussed about their subjects and G. Cyras subjects general aspects and program development and good practice options.

As another purpose lecturer named VGTU opportunity to take students from France under the Erasmus program. During the visit G. Cyras participated in 4th International teaching forum organized by the University of Clermont Auvergne, Utah Valley University from USA and Shanghai Normal University from China. In between of meetings lecturer gave a presentation for possible VGTU Erasmus students.

Additional goal was to search for potential partners, discussing possible areas of cooperation, joint publications options. All Erasmus week participants from 20 different universities were introduced with VGTU VVF conferences and journals. They did discuss the possibility of cooperation, particularly with the Faculty of Business Management, as some universities already have existing contracts, but with other VGTU faculties. It is noted that one potential partner may be the Clermont Auvergne university as it has very strong business school and no existing cooperation. Meeting with international relations representative Bettina Aboab allowed to discuss possible cooperation.

During the visit cooperative relations were established not only with the University of Clermont Auvergne, but also with several universities, such as: Hochschule fur Angewandte Wissenschaften Munchen Germany; Haci Bayram Veli University Ankara – Turkey; Hochschule fur Wirtschaft, Technik und Kultur Berlin – Germany; Aalen university Germany; University of Sheffield United Kingdom; Utah Valley University USA; University Complutense Madrid Spain; University Guadalajara Mexico; Shanghai Normal University China.
Professor Jobst Goerne told about their ongoing project „structur.e“, and left contact potential future cooperation. With all of them, Faculty of Business Management will try to develop cooperative relations.

Another objective was to find potential university partners. For this purpose, G. Cyras visited the company Michelin, French tyre manufacturer based in Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. It is the second largest tyre manufacturer in the world after Japanese Bridgestone and larger than both American Goodyear and German Continental. In addition to the Michelin brand, it also owns the Kléber tyres company, Uniroyal-Goodrich Tire Company, SASCAR, Bookatable and Camso brands. Michelin is also notable for its Red and Green travel guides, its roadmaps, the Michelin stars that the Red Guide awards to restaurants for their cooking, and for its company mascot Bibendum, colloquially known as the Michelin Man. During the visit, G. Cyras coordinated VGTU students outbound practices possibility’s under the Erasmus opportunities.

Internship experience gained by the lecturer will be integrated into the subjects taught in VGTU Business Technology and Entrepreneurship department.

New doctoral dissertation
VILNIUS TECH Library invites you to follow the published new dissertations. The dissertation „Performance investigation of a hybrid car engine fuelled with gasoline and gaseous mixtures“ („Benziną ir dujų mišinius naudojančio hibridinio automobilio variklio efektyvumo tyrimas“) prepared at VILNIUS TECH by Tadas Vipartas. The dissertation was prepared in 2021–2026. Scientific consultant – Prof. Dr Alfredas Rimkus. The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defence Council of the Scientific Field of Transport Engineering in the Aula Doctoralis Meeting Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 9 a.m. on 12 June 2026. This dissertation investigates the use of alternative fuels (natural gas and hydrogen) to increase the efficiency of a spark-ignition engine. The impact of different fuels and engine control algorithms on the combustion process and on energy and ecological indicators was determined and evaluated by analysing the emerging technological constraints within the context of a power-split (series-parallel) hybrid powertrain. The dissertation presents a review of scientific literature, analysing the directions for internal combustion engine improvement, the properties of gaseous fuels and the challenges of their application, along with the operating principles of automotive hybrid powertrains. Bench tests were conducted to investigate the effect of late intake valve closing timing on an engine operating on natural gas, and the influence of hydrogen additives on the combustion process and knock control. The numerical analysis of the engine’s combustion process was performed using AVL BOOST™ software, while the energy and ecological indicators of the hybrid vehicle were evaluated through experimental research and numerical simulation in the AVL CRUISE™ software. The following main results were obtained in the dissertation: retarding the intake valve closing timing increased the brake thermal efficiency and NOx emissions while reducing carbon dioxide emissions when the engine operates on natural gas. It was determined that a hydrogen additive in the fuel improves the engine’s energy indicators, but increases nitrogen oxides emissions and the risk of engine knock. Engine knock is effectively managed by retarding the ignition advance angle. Numerical simulation results confirmed that these trends persist during the Worldwide Harmonized Light-duty Vehicles Test Cycle: the use of hydrogen reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, but increases nitrogen oxides emissions. The dissertation results revealed the potential of these technologies and strategies for their application. The obtained data can be applied in the development and selection of advanced engine control algorithms and in the formulation of technologically sound environmental standards. Nine scientific articles have been published on the topic of the dissertation: six in scientific journals indexed in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database with an impact factor, one in a scientific journal indexed in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database without an impact factor, one in conference proceedings indexed in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index, and one in peer-reviewed conference proceedings not indexed in international databases. The research results were presented at three scientific conferences in Lithuania and Poland. Doctoral dissertation readers can search via VILNIUS TECH Virtual Library.
