On May 8, the staff of the Faculty of Transport Engineering of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU), celebrated the 20th anniversary of its activities.
"After the restoration of the independence in Lithuania, a new transport system came into being, requiring new professionals. At that time, there were no higher education institutions, preparing either railway or aviation specialists in our country. So, in March 1994, by the order of VGTU Rector, Professor Edmundas Kazimieras Zavadskas, the Faculty of Transport Engineering was founded. The Department of Railway Transport was founded too, which is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of its existence," – said Vilius Bartulis, Associated Doctor, and the Dean of the Faculty of Transport Engineering during the festive event.
According to the Dean, the Faculty has expanded a lot during the last two decades: currently, there are seventy two academic groups, consisting of about one thousand and six hundred students. Students have got seventy experienced teachers, some of them are not only scientists, but also experienced manufacturers. Studies have become more interesting and promising, some study programmes becoming extremely popular. Both study programmes – Transport Engineering and Transport Engineering Economy and Management – have reached the top of ten most popular engineering specialities. Graduates of the Transportation Engineering Faculty solve complex logistics challenges, create and develop transport projects, working creatively in many Lithuanian business undertakings, public institutions and organizations.
"Time has already proved that the establishment of the Faculty of Transport Engineering is a good strategic decision. After having reached good study results, more and more scientists of the Faculty are getting involved into the scientific research. I wish the Faculty to continue to expand its international contacts and to become the leader in the context of the Baltic countries. Currently, the road and railway infrastructure is being rapidly developed in Lithuanian and our ambition is to become a modern State, a country of transit, that is why the input of the scientists of the Faculty of Transport Engineering is important and will become more important for the future of our country," – said Alfonsas Daniūnas, VGTU Rector, congratulating the personnel of the faculty.
Vladislav Kondratovič, Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Transport, Stasys Dailydka, head of JSC "Lithuanian Railways", representatives of the Associations of "Linava", "Lineka", "Transeksta", social partners of other institutions, cooperating with the faculty, colleagues from Warsaw University of Technology, Ukraine universities, KTU, ASU, KU, and colleges congratulated the personnel of the faculty, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its activities. VGTU brass orchestra dedicated its concert for the guests of this festive event.
