How to avoid being left without money and accommodation: 5 important steps before using accommodation platforms

As Christmas and New Year's approach, many people are planning holiday trips, which includes booking accommodations through online platforms. However, one should not trust them blindly – it's important to be aware of potential fraud risks. Ramunas Liubertas, Senior Cybersecurity Engineer at "NOD Baltic" and ESET expert, shares 5 key tips to help protect your accounts, securely book accommodation, and avoid potential losses.

According to a study by the IT security company ESET, which was published in October, the scale of cyber attacks targeting accommodation platforms like "Booking.com" and "Airbnb" has significantly increased this year. Fraudsters, taking advantage of increased traveler activity during the summer season, have found new ways to scam money by exploiting user trust and advanced technologies. Lithuanian users should also be cautious when using these or similar platforms, as they are popular in the country, and fraud methods are becoming more sophisticated as well as harder to recognize.

Fraud tactics on accommodation platforms

One of the most common types of fraud is fake hotel or apartment listings, which contain links to counterfeit websites. On these seemingly reliable but illegally created websites, users are asked to enter their bank card or personal details required for booking accommodation.

As noted by Ramunas Liubertas, Senior Cybersecurity Engineer at "NOD Baltic" and ESET expert, often, people who have been deceived share this information on social media – some warn others, while others ask for help.

"Just recently, I had to help my relatives because they were scammed while booking an apartment near the Baltic Sea, in Liepaja, Latvia, which was done through 'Booking' – sharing his personal experience, the cybersecurity engineer says. – The fraudsters in this particular case acted very professionally: the owner of the vacation apartment posted a rental ad with pictures and a contact phone number on the 'Airbnb' platform, and the very next day, an identical ad appeared on the 'Booking' platform – it was uploaded by the fraudsters. However, the price on the other platform was lower, so my relatives hurried to book and make a payment, without thinking that something could go wrong. As soon as the fraudsters received the payment, they immediately removed the fake listing. When my relatives contacted the apartment owner for arrival details, she was surprised that the same ad appeared on another platform and refused to accept the family, claiming she hadn’t received any payment."

What you need to know before booking

Before purchasing accommodation services, cybersecurity engineer R. Liubertas emphasizes that users should always remain vigilant. Before making a booking, the cybersecurity expert advises checking when the specific listing was posted. If the ad was posted a few days ago, it could be from a new platform user, but if the listing was posted just a few hours or minutes ago, one should hesitate and try to verify that it is not a scam.

"Accommodation platforms are looking for ways to combat fraud and protect users, so if a complaint is filed or a suspicious account is detected, it should be removed, but this can take some time, and fraudsters are getting more clever in finding ways to bypass this," explains R. Liubertas.

It's also worth considering how many reviews the accommodation listings have, as a small number or a lack of reviews is often a sign of fraudsters' fake "offers." Remember, fraudsters creating fake listings may also write false reviews themselves to make the offer appear more reliable.
"People often fall into online fraud traps because of haste. As soon as the payment is made, the tension eases, and it seems like a good deal was snagged, but then the realization hits that something isn’t quite right. As soon as you suspect that you might have been scammed, immediately contact the platform's customer service and your bank. However, lost money is often not refunded, especially if the report is delayed. In my relatives' case, they managed to recover their money within a couple of weeks only because they contacted the platform on time and made the payment through the official accommodation platform," says R. Liubertas.

5 steps to protect yourself when booking accommodation

Cybersecurity engineer R. Liubertas outlines a few key actions users should take to protect their accounts on accommodation platforms:

  1. Use strong and unique passwords and change them regularly;
  2. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA);
  3. Check the listing’s posting time and the number of reviews;
  4. Never share payment details outside the platform;
  5. Report any suspicious activity to the official customer service.
"If a user uses the same password on multiple sites and hasn’t enabled two-factor authentication (2FA), if the password is leaked on one platform, it can be used on others. Most reservation platforms offer the 2FA feature for free, so it’s recommended to enable it," emphasizes R. Liubertas. "It’s also important to regularly change passwords, use unique passwords for each account, and store them in password management apps to avoid losing them."

As it is stated on the websites of "Airbnb" and "Booking", these accommodation service companies are looking for ways to reduce the risk of fraud and encourage users to report fake listings.

Although he works in academia, Dr. Jakubovskis sees himself primarily as a civil engineer supporting other civil engineers. While structural designers and project managers oversee the overall design of buildings and infrastructure – determining layouts, dimensions, and cost-effective construction solutions – researchers provide the specialised expertise needed to develop new materials and solve complex engineering challenges. „Practising engineers often don't have enough time to investigate highly specialised solutions or explore entirely new materials – that's where we come in. Sometimes we analyse complex structural behaviour through numerical modelling, and sometimes we investigate how emerging materials can be applied in construction. In my opinion, research engineers don't quite fit the traditional stereotype of scientists wearing white lab coats or solving abstract equations all day. Our work is highly practical—we often design, manufacture, and physically test new structural systems ourselves.“ Engineering That Leaves a Visible Legacy Among the projects he is most proud of is the Biological Bridge installed at the Kairėnai Botanical Garden, as well as the Living Concrete wall currently being developed for the rooftop of the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre. Both projects demonstrate how engineering can merge sustainability, science, and architectural design. „These projects represent the culmination of years of laboratory work and numerical modelling. They are demonstration structures that show what is possible when innovative materials meet advanced engineering. I also value their aesthetic qualities. Designing complex organic forms allows you to feel a little like a sculptor creating a work of art.“ Looking ahead, Dr. Jakubovskis believes his greatest achievements are still to come. His long-term vision is to create buildings with façades intentionally designed to be colonised by living organisms, allowing them to interact naturally with their environment while providing ecological and functional benefits. I believe that within the next five years, we'll be able to stand in front of one of these buildings and say: this is a significant achievement.“ A Profession That Will Still Matter in 100 Years For Dr. Jakubovskis, choosing civil engineering was an easy decision. Since childhood, he enjoyed watching buildings rise from the ground and observing construction sites and heavy machinery. „You don't need extraordinary dreams to become a civil engineer. If you want to build, you become an engineer. It's not like travelling to space or conducting research in Antarctica.“ What motivates him most is the opportunity to create structures that remain valuable for decades – or even centuries. „Every civil engineer feels proud when driving past a bridge or building they helped design, and they will always point it out to everyone in the car,“ he says with a smile. His own career began in structural design after completing his third year of university. He later pursued doctoral studies focusing on the cracking behaviour and deformation of reinforced concrete structures before returning to industry. Eventually, an invitation to rejoin VILNIUS TECH brought him back to academia. „I came back, and today I'm doing exactly what I truly enjoy.“ Advice for Future Engineers As both a researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Dr. Jakubovskis emphasises that a university education is essential for anyone pursuing a career in civil engineering. „It would be extremely difficult to master this profession through self-study alone. Should you begin with theoretical mechanics, mechanics of materials, or structural mechanics? University programmes are carefully designed so that knowledge develops step by step, preparing graduates to become highly qualified professionals.“ He also offers practical advice to prospective students: „Don't be afraid of mechanics, physics, or mathematics. Every semester, identify a few key subjects, understand them thoroughly, and make sure you truly master them. Once those foundations are in place, everything else builds naturally.“ Industry Investing in Future Engineers Preparing the next generation of civil engineers is a shared responsibility between universities and industry. As digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies continue to reshape construction, employers increasingly recognise the importance of investing in future talent. The Faculty of Civil Engineering at VILNIUS TECH enjoys long-standing partnerships with the Lithuanian Builders Association (LSA) and the Lithuanian Association of Civil Engineers (LSIS), both of which actively support education and professional development.
