How to avoid plagiarism

June 4, 2020

The library informs that plagiarism is considered one of the most serious contraventions of scientific and academic activity. “Plagiarism is the appropriation of other people’s material without giving proper credit“ (The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity). It is the copying and presentation of information from another person’s work, without specifying links, with the intent of showing it as your work.

It is important not to avoid plagiarism but also to be aware of copyright requirements. You may use copyrighted material in your academic work, according to certain conditions and references to the work used. More about copyright.

The following are considered plagiarism:

  • Presentation (copying) of another work as one's own (copying of another work, submission of a purchased work, presentation of another student's, friends, relatives work);
  • Citation and paraphrasing without mentioning the original author;
  • Citation without reference to sources or misrepresentation of references;
  • Presentation of copied parts without paraphrasing in your work with references to sources. But without quotes indicating, that these are the thoughts of another author;
  • Presentation the same job or a similar job (even your job) such submission is called self-plagiarism. Self-plagiarism is commonly described as recycling or reusing one’s own specific words from previously published texts. Avoid presenting your work that has already been evaluated. In specific cases, it is worth consulting with your supervisor.

Some tips on how to avoid plagiarism in your works:

  • Quote correctly – quoting is the exact copying of another person's text;
  • When quoting another person’s text literally, you must use quotation marks and provide a reference to the text being quoted;
  • Paraphrasing someone else’s idea in your own words and provide a citation to the original source.
  • Always provide references to the source of information, when mentioning others' ideas, methods or research results in your work;
  • Store information about the sources of information used at work.

To avoid missing citations, make sure to insert citations while you are writing your paper. Familiarize yourself with the referencing style required by your institution and use it. All cited sources must be included in the bibliography, and all sources in the bibliography must be mentioned in the text.
We would like to remind you that VGTU University has installed the tool Turnitin. It is an originality checking and plagiarism prevention service that checks your writing for citation mistakes or inappropriate copying.
Students should refer to their supervisors if they want to check their work.

Exhibition “Kaleidoscope” by Mindaugas Užkuraitis Presented in Gallery A
On May 21, the presentation of Mindaugas Užkuraitis’ exhibition “Kaleidoscope” took place. Mindaugas Užkuraitis is an Associate Professor at the VILNIUS TECH Faculty of Architecture, Head of the Department of Design, Chief Artist at LRT, and a member of the Lithuanian Design Forum. His professional practice includes scenography for television, concerts, and public events. He has created stage designs for the national selection finals of Eurovision, the finals of Dainų dainelė, the Lithuanian of the Year Awards, as well as for TV programs such as Lietuva kalba, Rinkimai, LRT Forumas, and other projects. “In this exhibition, I continue my exploration of color, layering, and fragmented forms. I am interested in how different elements come together into a unified image that constantly shifts depending on the viewer’s perspective. The principle of a kaleidoscope resonates with me because there is no single stable composition – the image is continuously changing, yet the structure remains. Working with spray paint, stencils, and layers, I aim to create visual systems where both chance and control emerge. These works are not about a specific narrative – they are about the process of seeing: how an image forms, breaks apart, and reassembles into a new whole,” notes the exhibition’s author, Mindaugas Užkuraitis. The exhibition in Gallery A  will be on view until May 29. Virtual exhibition >>> Archive of virtual exhibitions >>> Photos by Aleksas Jaunius

The International Day for Biological Diversity is observed on May 22 and is dedicated to raising awareness of the diversity of life on Earth and the importance of its conservation. The observance underscores the global significance of maintaining ecological balance, preventing species extinction, and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources. Today, biodiversity conservation is closely intertwined not only with the natural sciences, but also with technological innovation, engineering solutions, and the sustainable development of urban environments and infrastructure. Rapid climate change, environmental pollution, urbanization, and the intensive exploitation of natural resources are driving the need for innovative approaches. Consequently, biodiversity-related challenges are increasingly relevant across a wide range of disciplines — from environmental engineering and energy systems to construction, transportation, and smart city technologies. The community of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University is invited to make use of the subscribed EBSCO Publishing  database, which provides access to thousands of scholarly articles, e-books, and other academic resources covering a broad spectrum of topics, including: biodiversity and ecosystem conservation natural sciences and life sciences research sustainable engineering solutions the impact of climate change on the environment and infrastructure green energy sustainable urban development and smart cities environmental protection, ecology, and biodiversity circular economy and sustainable development Access is available from VILNIUS TECH computer network or via VPN. As a security measure, two-factor authentication is additionally required (i.e. verification from mobile device app or by call). We also encourage you to use VILNIUS TECH’s subscription databases.
