International QS ranking 2018: in which subject areas Lithuanian universities are the strongest?

The results of international university ranking QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018 were announced today. This ranking evaluates and compares universities by various research and subject areas. This year only three Lithuanian universities are ranked in this ranking. They are ranked in 4 subject areas and 7 subject groups.

Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) has been ranked in 4 subject areas and 2 subject groups. VGTU stays strong in Engineering – Civil & Structural subject group for several consecutive years, and ranks at 101-150 place. VGTU is the only university in the Baltic States at such a high position in the area of Civil Engineering sciences. In the subject of Architecture / Built Environment VGTU also stands at 101-150 place. In the subject area of Engineering and Technology VGTU ranks at 329 place. In addition to this, the university is also ranked in Business & Management Studies (201-250 place). The biggest change is achieved in subjects of Economics & Econometrics. VGTU is ranked higher by 100 positions and now is at 201-250 place (301–350 place in 2017) among top world universities. In the subject area of Social Sciences and Management VGTU moved up from 340 place to 315. These results are the best not only in Lithuania, but also in the Baltic States.

“VGTU is very strong in subject areas of Civil Engineering and Architecture not only in Lithuania, but also in the Baltic States. Meanwhile, improving ranking positions in Social Sciences is the outcome of strong focus on the University’s goals. Social sciences are different at VGTU: this subject area is strongly intertwined with and is based on technologies. Today it is vital when we speak about areas such as FinTech or LegalTech. It is highly valued and recognized worldwide, and also reflects in the results of international rankings. Our aim is to is not only to maintain the leading role, but also to keep on improving our results in international rankings,” VGTU Rector Prof. Dr. Alfonsas Daniūnas comments on the results of the rankings.

Prof Dr Jelena Stankevičienė, Dean of the Faculty of Business Management, says that such changes as the fourth industrial revolution, the new era of FinTech and blockchain means that every university’s graduate in addition to good knowledge of their area of studies should also understand the impact of technological solutions on society. “Society needs people who master both STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and social sciences. Leading technical universities also have very strong business, economics and management schools. VGTU, as a leading university in sciences of technology in Lithuania and in the Baltic states, is strengthening its positions in subject areas of business studies and economics. It clearly reflects in the QS rankings,” says J. Stankevičienė.

VU is also listed in the rankings under the following subject areas: Linguistics (151-200 place), Physics & Astronomy (251-300 place), Natural Sciences (400 place), Arts and Humanities (401–450 place), Medicine (451–500 place), and Social Sciences and Management (451–500 place.).

KTU ranks 451-500 in the subject area of Engineering and Technologies.

“We should note that every year the ranking screens more universities than the previous year, and every year the competition for the best places is stronger; thus, maintaining the same position in the ranking or reaching better ranking positions is a very good result,” says Lidija Kraujalienė, Director of Strategic Planning, Quality Management and Analysis Centre.

This year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject features a record 48 subjects in 5 subject areas. The screening process covered over 4 500 universities, and only 1 130 higher education institutions have been ranked (1 117 in 2017). This ranking uses only external data sources and databases of scientific publications. The criteria for evaluation covered reputation among academics, reputation among employers, citations attributions, and H-index.

The dissertation „Research and application of biofiltration materials in the purification of biogas from hydrogen sulfide“ prepared at VILNIUS TECH by Kamyab Mohammadi. The dissertation was prepared in 2022–2026. Scientific consultant – Assoc. Prof. Dr Rasa Vaiškūnaitė. The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defense Council of the Scientific Field of Environmental Engineering in the Aula Doctoralis Meeting Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 10 a.m. on 15 June 2026. This dissertation analyzes the removal of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from biogas via biofiltration. The study addresses one of the major challenges in biogas utilization, effective H₂S removal, since this compound is toxic and corrosive, and significantly reduces the operational efficiency and service life of biogas energy systems. The main object of the research is biofiltration materials intended for hydrogen sulfide removal from biogas: biochar produced from sewage sludge, cellular lightweight concrete (CLC) waste, and polyurethane foam (PUF). The doctoral dissertation aims to increase the efficiency of hydrogen sulfide removal from biogas and to enhance the operational stability of the biofilter by applying physically and chemically modified as well as unmodified waste-derived materials within the biofiltration process. The dissertation consists of an introduction, a literature review, chapters on methodology and results, general conclusions and recommendations, and lists of references and the author’s publications related to the dissertation topic. The Introduction presents the research problem and its relevance, describes the research object, formulates the aim and objectives, outlines the research methodology, scientific novelty, and practical significance of the results, and states the defended propositions. The First Chapter reviews biotechnologies for hydrogen sulfide removal from biogas, with particular emphasis on biofiltration mechanisms, the properties of biofilter packing materials, and the key factors determining process efficiency. The Second Chapter describes the experimental methodologies used to select biofiltration materials, determine their physicochemical and adsorption properties, inoculate and cultivate microorganisms, evaluate hydrogen sulfide removal efficiency, and the mathematically model the biofiltration process. The Third Chapter presents the results of theoretical and experimental investigations of innovative filtration materials, revealing the relationship between their properties and modification with microbial establishment, biofilm formation, and filter performance in hydrogen sulfide removal, and compares experimental results with mathematical modeling outcomes. Eight scientific papers related to the dissertation topic have been published: two in Web of Science-indexed journals with an impact factor, one in a Web of Science-indexed journal without an impact factor, four in other internationally indexed journals, and one in a conference proceedings volume indexed in the Scopus database. €75,000 Funding Opportunity for Women-Led Deep Tech Startups
Women-led deep tech startups are invited to apply for the European Union-funded "Women TechEU 2" program. This initiative aims to strengthen women's entrepreneurship in the technology sector, foster innovation, and help promising startups prepare for further growth and attract additional funding. Selected participants will receive a €75,000 grant and the opportunity to take part in a six-month tailored business development program. During this period, startups will be provided with mentoring, consulting, and training services designed to accelerate business growth and enhance competitiveness in the international market. The total budget for the "Women TechEU 2" program is €12 million. The plan is to fund 160 women-led startups from across Europe. Application Process The application process for the new call consists of two stages. First, applicants must submit an application for the Eligibility Strand to verify whether the startup meets the program's requirements. Applicants deemed eligible will then be invited to submit a Full Proposal. The eligibility assessment stage began on June 1, 2026. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with evaluations conducted weekly – the weekly submission deadline is every Tuesday by 18:00 (17:00 CEST). The first deadline is June 30, 2026, and the final deadline is July 13, 2027. Applicants will receive their eligibility assessment results no later than one week after the respective submission deadline. Who Can Apply? The program is designed for women-led, early-stage deep tech startups.
