As in previous years, the National Lithuanian Library Week will be celebrated from April 23 to 29. This initiative, organized by the Lithuanian Librarians’ Association and uniting libraries across the country, aims to promote reading, encourage communities to attend events and take part in various initiatives, showcase the achievements of Lithuanian libraries, and inspire librarians themselves to celebrate their profession. Throughout the week, a wide range of events will take place in libraries nationwide, including the now-traditional librarians’ hike.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of National Lithuanian Library Week. The focus is on services that libraries provide beyond regular working hours – services available around the clock, every day of the week. The week invites reflection on questions such as: What kind of library does today’s user need? What services are relevant, and what competencies are required to ensure high-quality service delivery at convenient times? These questions are raised by the theme of this year's Library Week: „Library 24/7“.
The opening event of the National Lithuanian Library Week will take place on April 23 in Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania. During the event, the best librarians of the country will traditionally be awarded. The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, Šarūnas Birutis, will announce the Best Library Manager of the Year, the Best Librarian, and the Best Young Librarian. It will be possible to watch the event online.
A traditional part of Library Week is the conference, which this year will be held on April 29 in Povilas Višinskis Šiauliai County Public Library. The conference will feature presentations highlighting diverse library activities and the development of new services, current topics in international library science research, and the outcomes of projects run by Lithuanian libraries. Discussions will focus on the skills needed by the next generation of information professionals, the range of information resources, access to electronic resources, and inclusive solutions for people unable to read standard printed text. Unable to attend are invited to watch remotely. It will be possible to watch the event online.
Throughout the week, libraries across Lithuania will host events for their local communities: book presentations, author meet-and-greets, lectures, educational activities, concerts, and other initiatives. Visitors are encouraged to check what’s happening at their nearest library and get involved.
Alongside public events, Library Week also includes initiatives that invite librarians to celebrate and take pride in their profession.
On April 26, a librarians’ hike will take place in the Neris Regional Park, gathering hundreds of professionals and showcasing the energy, initiative, and unity of the librarian community. Throughout the week, librarians will also compete in the intellectual TV quiz show „Who and Why?“ aired on LRT television.
The National Lithuanian Library Week has been held annually since 2001. It traditionally begins on April 23, which UNESCO has declared World Book and Copyright Day.
