The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defence Council of the Scientific Field of Mechanical Engineering in the SRA-I Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 10 a.m. on 4 June 2024.
The dissertation investigates the problem of parameters influencing the effectiveness of firearm sound suppressors. The main object of research is the suppressor of a recreational firearm, the parameters affecting its effectiveness, and the structural solutions of the geometry. These parameters are important for suppressor design. A detailed analysis of the suppressor by explaining various parameters of its construction allows to increase its effectiveness. This dissertation aims to determine the parameters that influence the effectiveness of the suppressor of a recreational firearm the most, to create effective suppressors of a new design and to evaluate their effectiveness theoretically and experimentally. The work solves such tasks: to analyse typical suppressors of firearms, to create theoretical models of a firearm suppressor, and to perform a simulation of the suppression efficiency of the researched object, the purpose of which is to determine criteria for efficiency improvement. Finally, to create and produce physical models of a firearm suppressor, conduct applied research in a real environment, and, after analysing the obtained experimental results, propose improvements to suppressor geometry. The dissertation consists of an introduction, three chapters, a summary of the results, lists of used literature and author’s publications on the topic of the dissertation, and one appendix. The introductory chapter describes the research problem, relevance, object of the research, purpose, and tasks of the work, describes the research methodology, the scientific novelty of the work, the practical significance of the work results, and defended statements. At the end of the introduction, the author’s publications, presentations at conferences, and the structure of the dissertation are presented. The first chapter revises scientific literature on firearm noise and its propagation, damage, and suppression. It also includes a review of firearm attachments and research into their effectiveness, both experimental and theoretical. Conclusions are formulated, and the tasks of the dissertation are clarified. The second chapter presents studies of the effectiveness of the firearm suppressor. The design elements of the suppressor, their influence on the suppressor’s effectiveness and other parameters of the firearm are reviewed. Conclusions are presented. The third chapter presents the experimental studies and results of firearm suppressor effectiveness. General conclusions about suppressor efficiency are presented. Four articles have been published on the dissertation topic: two in mate-rials of conference articles and two in peer-reviewed scientific journals with a citation rate in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database. Regarding the dissertation, five reports were read at international conferences.
