The dissertation „Research of the combustion process in a compression ignition engine fuelled with liquid and gaseous biofuels“ („Skystaisiais ir dujiniais biodegalais veikiančio slėginio uždegimo variklio degimo proceso tyrimai“) prepared by VILNIUS TECH, Saulius Stravinskas. The dissertation was prepared in 2018–2023, supervisor Assoc. Prof. Dr Alfredas Rimkus.

The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defence Council of the Scientific Field of Transport Engineering in the Senate Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 10 a. m. on 13 June 2023.

The dissertation deals with the combustion efficiency of dual-biofuels (liquid and gaseous) in a compression ignition internal combustion engine, supplying the gas together with the intake air. The main object of research is the combustion process of dual-fuel, i.e., biogas and second-generation biodiesel, in a direct injection compression ignition engine. The goal of the dissertation is to determine the influence of these fuels on performance and emission indicators after experimental and theoretical research of dual-fuels, i.e., biodiesel and biogas, and to make suggestions on the efficiency of these fuels. The dissertation solves several main tasks: the dual-fuel influence on performance and emission parameters is researched using conventional diesel and alternative fuels (biodiesel, natural gas and biogas), changing the composition of the combustible mixture and the injection timing of liquid fuel. Based on the change of theoretical and mathematical modelling parameters of the compression ignition engine, the influence of dual-fuel on the combustion process was determined to evaluate the economic efficiency of dual-fuel use.

The dissertation „Modeling information and communication technology solutions for the energy sector management“ („Informacinių ryšio technologijų sprendimų modeliavimas energetikos sektoriui valdyti“) prepared by VILNIUS TECH, Youssef El Tabsh. The dissertation was prepared in 2016–2023, supervisor Prof. Dr Vida Davidavičienė.

The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defence Council of Management in the Senate Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 2 p. m. on 13 June 2023.

The modern world is facing challenges in the area of energy management. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are among the most important tools for managing, monitoring, and improving energy consumption efficiency, provided they are implemented and used for this purpose. Not all countries are dealing with these issues successfully and effectively. Therefore, scientific and practical solutions based on region specifics are necessary. It is crucial to understand that energy management in modern theories does not only mean reducing energy consumption but also includes controlling and preventing energy loss. It also focuses on energy efficiency, the use of natural renewable and sustainable energy, energy recovery, and solar energy, which is the most abundant source next to wind energy, hydropower, ocean energy and bioenergy. Modern global energy consumption is drastically increasing since many factors determine the need. Important factors vary from socioeconomic to population increase, making the need for energy security and efficiency assurance essential to secure energy resources in the world in general and in developing countries specifically. ICTs are spreading worldwide and affecting the global systems in many livelihood sectors. ICTs have a wide positive impact on huge economic and developmental factors, from increasing productivity to controlling and monitoring the systems. The importance of energy supply in developing countries and the possibilities brought by ICTs for their management are deniable. The role of innovation in the world is very important, as well as the possibilities that were brought by ICTs for their management to create solutions that positively affect sustainability. The dissertation aims to identify the factors determining the improvement of energy sector management with the help of ICTs in developing countries.

New doctoral dissertation
VILNIUS TECH Library invites you to follow the published new dissertations. The dissertation „Performance investigation of a hybrid car engine fuelled with gasoline and gaseous mixtures“ („Benziną ir dujų mišinius naudojančio hibridinio automobilio variklio efektyvumo tyrimas“) prepared at VILNIUS TECH by Tadas Vipartas. The dissertation was prepared in 2021–2026. Scientific consultant – Prof. Dr Alfredas Rimkus. The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defence Council of the Scientific Field of Transport Engineering in the Aula Doctoralis Meeting Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 9 a.m. on 12 June 2026. This dissertation investigates the use of alternative fuels (natural gas and hydrogen) to increase the efficiency of a spark-ignition engine. The impact of different fuels and engine control algorithms on the combustion process and on energy and ecological indicators was determined and evaluated by analysing the emerging technological constraints within the context of a power-split (series-parallel) hybrid powertrain. The dissertation presents a review of scientific literature, analysing the directions for internal combustion engine improvement, the properties of gaseous fuels and the challenges of their application, along with the operating principles of automotive hybrid powertrains. Bench tests were conducted to investigate the effect of late intake valve closing timing on an engine operating on natural gas, and the influence of hydrogen additives on the combustion process and knock control. The numerical analysis of the engine’s combustion process was performed using AVL BOOST™ software, while the energy and ecological indicators of the hybrid vehicle were evaluated through experimental research and numerical simulation in the AVL CRUISE™ software. The following main results were obtained in the dissertation: retarding the intake valve closing timing increased the brake thermal efficiency and NOx emissions while reducing carbon dioxide emissions when the engine operates on natural gas. It was determined that a hydrogen additive in the fuel improves the engine’s energy indicators, but increases nitrogen oxides emissions and the risk of engine knock. Engine knock is effectively managed by retarding the ignition advance angle. Numerical simulation results confirmed that these trends persist during the Worldwide Harmonized Light-duty Vehicles Test Cycle: the use of hydrogen reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, but increases nitrogen oxides emissions. The dissertation results revealed the potential of these technologies and strategies for their application. The obtained data can be applied in the development and selection of advanced engine control algorithms and in the formulation of technologically sound environmental standards. Nine scientific articles have been published on the topic of the dissertation: six in scientific journals indexed in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database with an impact factor, one in a scientific journal indexed in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database without an impact factor, one in conference proceedings indexed in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index, and one in peer-reviewed conference proceedings not indexed in international databases. The research results were presented at three scientific conferences in Lithuania and Poland. Doctoral dissertation readers can search via VILNIUS TECH Virtual Library.
