On the occasion of World Architecture Day – International Conference of Young Scientists

On the eve of World Architecture Day, the Faculty of Architecture (FA) of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) is organising The 5th Baltic Conference of Emerging Scholars in Architecture, Landscape Architecture & Urbanism on 3 – 4 October 2024.

The conference will bring together 10 PhD students from 5 European universities. The two-day event invites researchers not only to share their research, but also to deepen their knowledge experientially and broaden their horizons by trying out new forms and methods.

The young scientists will give presentations at the Rokiškis Regional Museum – Manor House, visit the "Lost Shtetl" at the Museum of Šeduva Jewish History, and take part in seminars. The special guest of the conference will be Rainer Mahlamäki (Finnish architectural firm "Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects"), the author of the unique architectural museum "Lost Shtetl".

"We are delighted that PhD students are sharing their research with a wider circle of scholars and have the opportunity to learn from world-class professionals. Rainer Mahlamäki's presentation is definitely one of the most anticipated meetings", says Dr. Eglė Bagušinskaitė, Vice Dean of VILNIUS TECH FA.

The conference focuses on the development of the competences: the opportunity not only to gain valuable insights, but also to look at the researched objects from a different angle, starting from the author's own conception of the work. The PhD students will also participate in an academic writing workshop organised by dr. Mindaugas Reklaitis, who will help researchers to construct their research in a more creative way.

On the second day of the event, researchers will give presentations, peer-reviewers will share their insights and open discussions will take place. The researches topics covered by the participants are very diverse: from Turkey to Ukraine and Lithuania; from Baroque architecture to landscape, social housing, children's perception of the environment and other themes.

From 2020 onwards, the conference is organised in cooperation with Riga Technical University (RTU) and Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), with a different higher education institution each year. The conference has its origins in the "K. Šešelgis Readings", which have been held since 1999 to honour the significant Lithuanian urban scientist Kazis Šešelgis.

Today, thanks to successful partnerships, the conference has acquired an international dimension and provides an opportunity for researchers to grow by opening up a wider geography and even more inventive thinking.
