Student workshops: from organic materials to artificial intelligence

September 10, 2024
In the first weeks of September, the third year students of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) are taking part in workshops. From Dortmund to Vilnius, from the application of local organic material technologies to artificial intelligence, the study process at the Faculty of Architecture (FA) is extremely multi-layered.

This autumn, third-year students at the FA have the opportunity to participate in one of four workshops offering a variety of trainings, seminars, and the opportunity to try out contemporary tools and different contexts. They also include open lectures and planned public presentations of the results. Participation in the workshops is an integral part of the study process for third-year students.

Under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liutauras Nekrošius (FA) and Christiane Fülscher (Dortmund), some of the students travelled to Dortmund for a joint workshop between VILNIUS TECH, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund and the Brno University of Technology. During the workshop, students from Lithuania, Germany and the Czech Republic are looking for solutions to open up one of the schools in Dortmund to the local community.

The next joint workshop takes place in Vilnius. "Architecture foundation" together with VILNIUS TECH and Vilnius Academy of Arts organise the workshop "Altering matter", exploring circular design and organic materials (VILNIUS TECH curators lect. Gabrielė Šarkauskienė and lect. Antanas Šarkauskas). The workshop participants explore the possibilities of circular design in architecture – from learning about organic materials and developing practices (e.g. reed roofs) to finding solutions for the decaying greenhouses of the botanical garden, which are in need of renovation.

Organic materials and sustainability aspects are also explored in the workshop "Let's Courtyard" in the FA courtyard, joined by FA Alumni Aistė Gaidilionytė and Kamilė Vasiliauskaitė. The workshop explores the theme of public spaces, experimenting with the greening of the courtyard and trying to enhance its authenticity, openness and attractiveness not only for the university community but also for the city's residents.

FA Alumni also joined the "Vilnius Symphony" workshop at the LinkMenų Factory. Reda Petravičiūtė teaches third-year students how to apply artificial intelligence in architecture. The students are spending these weeks analysing the perception of the city's soundscape using a variety of data and artificial intelligence. The series of open lectures during all workshops continues this week and workshop presentations are planned:

  • On 11 September at 7pm, an open lecture and discussion will take place at the Vilnius Academy of Arts .Architect Slavis Poczebut from MEKADO Studio (Germany) will present how to harness the potential of urban areas to create a healthier environment (part of the "Altering matter").
  • Participants and organisers of the workshop "Altering matter" will present the creative process and the installations they have created at the Vingis section of the Botanical Garden of Vilnius University on 12 September at 7pm.
  • On 13 September, 6 pm, the results of the workshop "Let's Courtyard" will be presented and discussed, and a community gathering will take place in the courtyard of the VILNIUS TECH FA, Trakų st. 1, Vilnius.
  • 16 September, 7 pm. Presentation of the results of the workshop "Vilnius Symphony" will take place at the MO Museum.
We invite you to actively participate in the open events.

New doctoral dissertation
VILNIUS TECH Library invites you to follow the published new dissertations. The dissertation „Performance investigation of a hybrid car engine fuelled with gasoline and gaseous mixtures“ („Benziną ir dujų mišinius naudojančio hibridinio automobilio variklio efektyvumo tyrimas“) prepared at VILNIUS TECH by Tadas Vipartas. The dissertation was prepared in 2021–2026. Scientific consultant – Prof. Dr Alfredas Rimkus. The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defence Council of the Scientific Field of Transport Engineering in the Aula Doctoralis Meeting Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 9 a.m. on 12 June 2026. This dissertation investigates the use of alternative fuels (natural gas and hydrogen) to increase the efficiency of a spark-ignition engine. The impact of different fuels and engine control algorithms on the combustion process and on energy and ecological indicators was determined and evaluated by analysing the emerging technological constraints within the context of a power-split (series-parallel) hybrid powertrain. The dissertation presents a review of scientific literature, analysing the directions for internal combustion engine improvement, the properties of gaseous fuels and the challenges of their application, along with the operating principles of automotive hybrid powertrains. Bench tests were conducted to investigate the effect of late intake valve closing timing on an engine operating on natural gas, and the influence of hydrogen additives on the combustion process and knock control. The numerical analysis of the engine’s combustion process was performed using AVL BOOST™ software, while the energy and ecological indicators of the hybrid vehicle were evaluated through experimental research and numerical simulation in the AVL CRUISE™ software. The following main results were obtained in the dissertation: retarding the intake valve closing timing increased the brake thermal efficiency and NOx emissions while reducing carbon dioxide emissions when the engine operates on natural gas. It was determined that a hydrogen additive in the fuel improves the engine’s energy indicators, but increases nitrogen oxides emissions and the risk of engine knock. Engine knock is effectively managed by retarding the ignition advance angle. Numerical simulation results confirmed that these trends persist during the Worldwide Harmonized Light-duty Vehicles Test Cycle: the use of hydrogen reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, but increases nitrogen oxides emissions. The dissertation results revealed the potential of these technologies and strategies for their application. The obtained data can be applied in the development and selection of advanced engine control algorithms and in the formulation of technologically sound environmental standards. Nine scientific articles have been published on the topic of the dissertation: six in scientific journals indexed in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database with an impact factor, one in a scientific journal indexed in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database without an impact factor, one in conference proceedings indexed in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Conference Proceedings Citation Index, and one in peer-reviewed conference proceedings not indexed in international databases. The research results were presented at three scientific conferences in Lithuania and Poland. Doctoral dissertation readers can search via VILNIUS TECH Virtual Library.
