Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) will devote 7.5 mln litas to modernize three first student dormitories (modernization works begin this year). It is planned that after this renovation heating of those dwellings will require twice less energy resources than now.
In the dormitories which were built in Soviet times (Sauletekis alley 16, 18 – 39A) separate substations will be equipped, roofs, external walls and basement floors will be heated and heating appliances, pipelines and the part of electrical installation will be replaced. In addition, balconies will be renewed and lighting protection system equipped.
‘Students are a very important part of our community. We seek to improve their living conditions, thus we’ve began dormitory modernization project where we’re going to pay most attention to heating efficiency and implementation of energy-saving measures,’ Vilnius Gediminas Technical University rector Alfonsas Daniunas said.
To renovate the first three dormitories Vilnius Gediminas Technical University borrows the largest part of funds (i.e. 6.3 mln litas) through the Public Investment Development Agency for ten years and the rest (i.e. 1.1 mln litas) VGTU invests itself. In addition, it is also planned to apply for a loan to renovate other two Vilnius Gediminas Technical University dormitories.
The dormitories will be renovated in accordance with higher education and vocational training institution renovation (modernization) programme whose aim is to modernize dormitories which were built in accordance with building technical standards valid until 1993, seeking a reasonable use of energy resources.
To provide a loan for a modernization of three dormitories the Public Investment Development Agency has taken JESSICA – one of the European Commission engineering initiatives, funds. These funds are European Support Structural and Investment Reward Funds into sustainable city projects.
A renovation of VGTU dormitories which will begin this year is going to be the third VGTU dormitory modernization stage. The first stage was devoted to a window replacement; the second one to repairing common dormitory rooms: corridors, kitchens, showers and toilets. A renovation of the first three dormitories is expected to be finished until 31 December, 2014 and all five dormitories are going to be modernized until 31 October, 2015.
