ATHENA Alumni Talks: From Particle Accelerators to Antimatter – Exploring the Work at CERN

Last year, the new ATHENA Alliance Career Service-initiated project “Alumni Talks” began gaining momentum. Graduates from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) are actively participating in this project as well. In these discussions, ATHENA alumni share their experiences, insights, and knowledge with the student community. This time, we dive deep into the world of physics with ATHENA alumnus Dr. Konstantinos Papastergiou, a Power Electronics Engineer in the CERN Systems Department.
 
The Main Projects of CERN
 
Dr. Papastergiou is currently engaged in projects critical to the future of scientific research at CERN. His work primarily focuses on designing power equipment essential for conducting reproducible experiments in particle accelerators and improving energy efficiency. One notable project involves developing power supplies for accelerator electromagnets that achieve remarkable precision, crucial for guiding particle beams.
 
This precision, as Dr. Papastergiou explains, is akin to hitting an ace in golf from 20 kilometers away. His ongoing efforts also include the development of a new system for powering kicker magnets, which could revolutionize the next generation of particle accelerators aimed at probing mysteries like the origin of dark matter.
 
The scientist also adds that he personally enjoys the processes and designs in view of making them better, more efficient, easier to use, and more performant.
 
“At CERN, I enjoy getting ownership of a mission and accomplishing it in ways that exceed people's expectations. To give you an example of our recent accomplishments, I can mention our latest regenerative power converter design that is now powering all transfer lines at CERN with an average of 30% lower power consumption. I recently started working on a niche technology for kicker magnet generators, and I will contribute with semiconductor and magnetics expertise to the inductive adders project pioneered at CERN,” he adds.
 
How Do Advancements in Power Electronics Technology Contribute to the Success of Experiments at CERN?
 
“Power electronics is a very dynamic field of engineering mainly driven by advances in power conversion for renewable energies, the transportation sector, and of course, consumer electronics, all of which require high energy efficiency and size reduction,” says Dr. K. Papastergiou.
 
The scientist explains that particle accelerators make use of technologies such as wide band-gap devices (silicon carbide, gallium nitride semiconductor switches) and advanced magnetic materials (grain-oriented silicon steel, nanocrystalline, and ferrite technology) to achieve faster and more reproducible/controllable accelerator cycles.
 
“One can think of the accelerator as a factory that needs to produce the same high-quality product (particle beams) with minimal time and material waste and with best-in-class reliability,” he adds.
 
Interdisciplinary Approach
 
As Dr. Konstantinos Papastergiou explains, the operation model of CERN is unique right from its inception. It is run by physicists whose role is to bridge the gap between theoretical physics and experiments. They collectively decide the direction for the next 10-30 years in strategy meetings, defining the accelerators and the instruments that need to be built.
 
“Engineers translate the experiment requirements to technology requirements and then design R&D programs to develop the parts of the technology that are missing. When a technology becomes available, CERN is first to adopt it, and engineers will start designing the accelerators,” says Dr. K. Papastergiou.
 
Thus, at this stage, many disciplines get involved, from planners to purchasing officers and civil engineers.
 
“Industries from member states will get involved to produce the equipment needed for the new accelerators, and then our own technicians and electromechanical technicians will help install everything in the tunnels. This project structure is unique for an organization that needs to work with the efficiency of a factory and with the creativity of a university; and it has proven itself with the most well-known of its projects, like the discovery of the Higgs boson,” says Dr. K. Papastergiou.
 
Careers at CERN
 
“CERN careers are attractive for the freedom and breadth they offer to people, hence the high demand. My advice for students is to get a first experience through trainee and technical student programs at the later stages of their studies. This is good both for their networking and for a better understanding of the work environment. But they should do this more than one time and in different companies during their studies,” highlights Dr. K. Papastergiou.
 
The scientist also has some other advice for students: “Following graduation, I suggest making up your mind between these two options: starting a career at CERN with our 2-3 year Graduate contracts and then moving for a career in industry, or starting a career in industry before landing a job as an experienced engineer at CERN. In other words, there are aspects of the job you can learn in industry while other skills can best be learned at CERN.”
 
Solving the Mysteries of Nature
 
“Dark matter is a term coined to describe a mystery mass that interacts with the cosmos as we know it and that we actually cannot see and measure using existing scientific instruments, hence the name 'dark matter',” explains Dr. K. Papastergiou.
 
The scientist adds that future particle accelerators, such as the “Future Circular Collider” and their experiments, will be designed to maximize the chances of detecting new particles that could, among other things, answer the 'dark matter' question.
 
“And just like the Nobel-winning discovery of the electron in 1898 had us scratching our heads for about 40 years prior to the appearance of the domain of 'electronics', it is likely that new discoveries such as the Higgs boson or the future dark matter-related particle could take another half-century before yielding useful results for humankind,” explains Dr. K. Papastergiou.
 
Dr. K. Papastergiou also adds, “What matters most is that on the path to discovery, CERN makes contributions that improve our lives, such as the invention of the World Wide Web, among others. And just like the Greek Nobel laureate Odysseus Elytis wrote in his poem 'Ithaka', what really matters in life is the journey itself, rather than reaching the destination.”

Time-resistant student love: Emilija and Marius found each other at VILNIUS TECH
Love from university days does not rust - this is something the heroes of this article unanimously agree on. For them, VILNIUS TECH (then Vilnius Gediminas Technical University) provided not only education, a circle of long-lasting friends, and countless beautiful memories, but also love.  Emilija Gaveniene and Marius Gavenas not only met here, but also got engaged during the diploma awarding ceremony - an event later even broadcasted on national television.  First of all, tell us how you met each other and your love story began. Emilija: Our story began completely by chance. In the summer of 2013, after finishing school, I received a call from the Student Representation of the Faculty of Transport Engineering. They invited me, a first-year student, to a freshmen camp. Without much hesitation, I agreed, although I had been admitted to the Entertainment Industries study program at the Faculty of Creative Industries. I clearly remember seeing Marius on the main university stairs when I arrived - his appearance and self-confidence caught my attention. At the first-year student camp, there was a presentation of the student representation. After the event, we sat together on a bench and talked for about half an hour about the representation and life choices. After the camp, we each returned to our student routine, until we met again on May 8, 2015, at the student representation anniversary. That evening we danced, and since then we’ve been inseparable. Marius: Emilija still does not believe it, but I noticed her during the very first introduction game at the freshmen camp in Aukstadvarys. The shy Samogitian girl somehow caught my attention, and in the evening sitting on the bench was not quite as accidental as it seems. Marius, you proposed during the graduation ceremony. Why did you decide to propose in this way? Were you nervous in front of such a large audience? Marius: It turned out that this proposal perfectly summarized the study cycle. We met on Emilija’s first day at the university and committed to each other on the last. I was not only studying but also actively involved in the student representation, so I felt a special connection to the Alma Mater. [caption id="attachment_122391" align="alignnone" width="2048"] Emilija ir Marius[/caption] As for the idea itself, I was never afraid of attention, and I was not scared by it until the very last moment. Only when I was already kneeling and people started cheering did I become very emotional, and I am not even sure if I managed to say the standard “Will you marry me?” Also, I must thank the university staff who encouraged me when I doubted whether it was a good idea. Emilija, was this move unexpected? Or did you suspect something? Emilija: At that time we were living separately, so it was a complete surprise. We had been together for about three years, so I secretly sometimes dreamed about engagement. The only small hint was that the evening before the proposal Marius asked what my favorite song was. But I really could not have guessed it would happen during the graduation ceremony. Your proposal video became very popular on social media and was even featured in various media outlets. Did this bring additional emotions? Emilija: The emotions were overflowing! We also received a lot of media attention - we were shown on LRT news, on the show “Good Morning, Lithuania,” and radio stations called us. We were happy to share our joy. Marius: The attention was unexpected. When planning it, I definitely did not think it would become so public. Friends joked that I should have put an advertisement on my back and monetized it. How did your story continue? Emilija: Soon after the engagement we moved in together into our first shared apartment. A year later, in 2018, we had a big wedding, where Marius prepared a slideshow presentation telling our story. It was the highlight of the celebration. Later we bought our first home, and five years later we had our daughter Beata. She fills our lives daily with laughter, joy, and maturity. [caption id="attachment_122387" align="alignnone" width="1361"] Emilija ir Marius[/caption] How do you live now? How has your love grown? What is your professional field? Emilija: We are currently in a mature stage of love - family health and peace have become the most important things. We enjoy parenthood but still make time for each other. Our daughter Beata is 2.5 years old, so we are growing together with her. I recently returned from maternity leave and work as a senior customer service manager at Lindstrom. Like many mothers, I combine work and family. Marius: A friend wished us at our wedding: “May you always have something to look forward to.” That really helps. We have future plans and are moving toward them. Thanks to Emilija’s enthusiasm, we travel a lot, and traveling strengthens our relationship and deepens love. Professionally, I develop technical sales projects, where my engineering education and confidence gained in student representation help a lot. Do you think university love really does not rust? Do you know other couples who met at university and are still together? Emilija: I think we are living proof that it truly does not rust - on the contrary, it only gets stronger. We have many friends who also met at university and are still together. What would you wish to the VILNIUS TECH community as former students? Emilija: We wish current and future students to be curious, active, and boldly engage in university life. Do not overthink every life choice, but rather enjoy everyday life - you never know where or when you might meet your life partner. Marius: I highly recommend using student status. While being a student, a lot is allowed and much is forgiven, so it is the best time to try yourself in different fields, go on Erasmus+ exchange, work different jobs, and try hobbies.
