DEEP EST. Nordic Deeptech forum

January 9, 2024

In recent years Estonia has taken steps to establish itself as a platform for deep tech startups. The purpose of the country's action plan is to encourage a supportive environment for the deep tech industry, targeting the creation of 500 startups by 2030. The plan includes doubling the number of deep tech projects by 2025 and quintuple by 2030. It is noteworthy that Estonian deep tech companies attracted nearly 175 million euros last year, through 15 transactions, indicating strong growth in the sector.

EIT Digital, Europe's leading digital technology innovation and education organization, will host DeepEST Forum 2024 on the afternoon of January 24. DeepEST is a half-day hybrid event (watchable online and on-site) that will bring together a diverse group of experts, from deep tech entrepreneurs and investors to IP commercialization specialists. The rich agenda focuses on funding deep tech companies, MVP creation and technology transfer. Thus, the forum offers a unique opportunity for early-stage founders, entrepreneurial researchers and visionaries to gain valuable insights and network with key players in the field.
After DeepEST visitors can extend their journey at sTARTUp Day 2024 (https://www.startupday.ee/), where the startup community comes alive to celebrate entrepreneurship amidst Tartu’s winter charm. Here, the ‘Zero to Hero’ theme resonates through engaging sessions, workshops, and the collective energy of over 3500 participants. Last but not least, university town Tartu is the 2024 European Capital of Culture (https://tartu2024.ee) and the opening program takes place on 26-27 January 2024!

Exchange Students Wrap Up Their Semester at VILNIUS TECH: Taking Home Knowledge, Friendships, and Experiences
Following the end of the spring semester, VILNIUS TECH bid farewell to Erasmus+ and other exchange program students who studied at the university, explored Lithuanian culture, and became a part of the VILNIUS TECH community. This semester, the VILNIUS TECH community was joined by 402 students from various countries around the world – 265 arrived for one semester, and 137 participated in blended intensive programs. While studying at the university, they deepened their professional knowledge, took part in practical classes, project activities, university events, and social initiatives. During their studies, they also had the opportunity to explore Vilnius and Lithuania, travel, discover new cultures, and forge friendships that, as they themselves note, will continue even after the mobility period ends. The university community also played a significant role in the students' experience. Those arriving for the semester were guided by the VILNIUS TECH International Relations Office team, the Vice-Deans for Internationalization, and the ESN VILNIUS TECH organization, all of whom helped them seamlessly integrate into university life and get to know Vilnius. At the end of the semester, students shared their impressions about studying at VILNIUS TECH. Many emphasized that their mobility experience was not just an academic opportunity, but also a vital stage of personal growth. "My Erasmus experience in Vilnius completely exceeded all my expectations, both personally and academically. I am leaving with a backpack full of memories, laughter, travels, and enormous personal growth," says Valentina Iriarte Perez from University of Granada, Spain. "What really stood out was the teaching staff. Every professor I spoke to had fantastic English, and the whole university community was incredibly friendly and always willing to help. Choosing VILNIUS TECH was one of the best decisions I've made and I'd highly recommend it to any future exchange student," shares Adam Biciste from Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic. "Being surrounded by international students every day taught me so much about other cultures and about myself. This experience gave me a much broader perspective on both life and my future career," tells Oleksandra Halahan from Lviv Polytechnic National University, Ukraine. "My Erasmus experience broadened my horizons and helped me grow significantly as a person. I would highly recommend it to any student seeking a unique and rewarding journey," says Acai Arman, Naval Academy „Mircea cel Bătrân“, Romania. "My time at VILNIUS TECH was much more than studying abroad. It was a journey of personal growth, cultural exploration, friendship, and creative development. Lithuania truly became my second home," shares YuChieh Hsu from National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (Taiwan). We thank all incoming international exchange students for their active participation in university life. We wish them the best of luck in their future studies and professional careers, and we hope that VILNIUS TECH and Lithuania will always remain a place you will want to return to.
