About

Choir History

Founded in 1964, the academic choir “Gabija” of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University is looking for musical and vocally talented students. “Gabija” delights and captivates its audiences with a diverse repertoire that blends folk, sacred, and popular music. It is one of the best mixed choirs in Lithuania, with achievements recognized both nationally and internationally. The ensemble takes pride in its numerous concert accomplishments, as well as the prestigious venues and festivals in which it has participated.

Traditions

Initiation Ceremony

Initiation Ceremony – a choir tradition symbolizing the welcoming of new members into the ensemble. During this initiation, new choristers get to know the choir’s spirit, values, and traditions through shared tasks, music, and experiences.

Final Rehearsal of the Year

A tradition that symbolically marks the end of the year before the festive season. During it, the events of the past year are reviewed, the most active choristers are honored, and at the end of the rehearsal, music flows freely—chosen by the choristers themselves—strengthening a sense of community and the joy of singing.

Carnival

A fun and creative choir tradition that invites choristers and conductors to dress up according to a chosen theme. During this tradition, musical performances, acting, and symbolic awards help strengthen community, encourage creativity, and foster a joyful choir atmosphere.

Feliksas Viskantas Birthday Commemoration

A choir tradition dedicated to honoring the memory of the long-time “Gabija” conductor and his contribution to the choir’s history. On this day, the choir sings in churches and nurtures the tradition of sacred music through concerts, each year choosing a different venue where “Gabija” has not yet performed.

Veterans’ Reunion

A choir tradition that brings together different generations of “Gabija” members and fosters a sense of community between former and current choristers. The annual gathering provides a space to share memories, music, and leisure time, strengthening the connection with the choir and passing on its values from one generation to another.

Dermavonė

A late-summer choir tradition dedicated to preparing for the new season and symbolically integrating new members into the ensemble. During this tradition, shared tasks and music strengthen the bond between choristers, while the collective experience marks the end of summer and the beginning of a new choir cycle.
