VILNIUS TECH Library invites you to follow the published new dissertations. The dissertation „Control of Robot Path Using an Artificial Intelligence System by Fusing Sensor Signal“ („Roboto trajektorijos valdymas dirbtinio intelekto sistema suliejant jutiklių signalus“) prepared at VILNIUS TECH by Vygantas Ušinskis. The dissertation was prepared in 2021–2026. Scientific consultant – Prof. Dr  Vytautas Bučinskas. The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defence Council of the Scientific Field of Mechanical Engineering in the Aula Doctoralis Meeting Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 10 a.m. on 30 April 2026. The dissertation examines the problem of local robot navigation, where sensor data must be processed in real time to assess the environment and generate an adaptive motion trajectory. The research object is a local navigation system with sensor fusion for mobile robots operating in tunnels and confined channels. Navigation is divided into four parts: environment assessment, localisation, path planning, and motion execution. The analysis of localisation technologies enables the selection of an effective sensor set for obstacle detection. Heuristic and artificial intelligence methods allow generating an optimal trajectory that avoids collisions and maintains the goal. The work addresses navigation and obstacle detection in human-inaccessible environments using a cost-efficient combination of active and passive sensors, with experimental validation of the system’s performance. The dissertation consists of an introduction, three main chapters, conclusions, references, and a list of the author’s scientific publications on the topic of the dissertation. The introduction presents the problem, relevance, research objective and tasks, methodology, scientific novelty, practical significance, and defended statements, as well as the author’s publications and the structure of the dissertation. The First Chapter presents a literature review, including an overview and comparison of global and local path-planning methods, localisation technologies and their combinations, and sensor-fusion approaches used in mobile robots. Key factors affecting reliable navigation are identified, forming the basis for the dissertation tasks. The Second Chapter describes the developed research methodology for autonomous tunnel navigation: the operating principles of the red, green and blue (RGB) channel-camera- and laser-based optical obstacle detection system, sensor-fusion techniques, and the application of modified Vector Field Histogram (VFH) and machine-learning-based path-planning methods. The Third Chapter presents the research results: optical system experiments, path-planning simulations, a comparison between machine-learning and modified VFH methods, and the testing of the constructed robot prototype in a laboratory environment. Five research papers have been published on the topic of the dissertation: three in journals indexed in the Web of Science database, and two in conference proceedings. Additionally, five conference presentations related to the dissertation topic have been delivered in Lithuania and abroad. The publication is intended for students of construction engineering who are involved in the design of construction sites and the planning of construction technological processes taking place on them. Medžiagų atsparumo chrestomatija (Chrestomathy of Strength of Materials) Marijonas Šukšta The textbook concisely presents the main topics of strength (mechanics) of materials. The publication systematically covers cases of deformation: tension, compression, shear, torsion, bending, and combined deformation. Alongside these cases, it provides the theory for calculating geometric properties of cross-sections, as well as methods for mechanical testing of materials. The fundamentals of stress and strain state theory are also briefly presented, and this knowledge is used to formulate failure hypotheses and theories. The book includes engineering-relevant special cases of deformation such as stability (buckling), fatigue, and dynamic loading. Theoretical concepts are illustrated with detailed applied examples. It describes the principles of working with the software, as well as tools for presenting and processing simulation results. The book examines electromagnetic wave propagation modes and resonant phenomena in rectangular and coaxial waveguides. It also covers the modelling of symmetric stripline and microstrip transmission lines, as well as basic and directional antennas. The dissertation „Research on Freezing Processes of Aerothermal Heat Pump Evaporator under Dynamic Environmental Conditions“ („Aeroterminio šilumos siurblio garintuvo užšalimo procesų tyrimai dinaminėmis aplinkos sąlygomis“) prepared at VILNIUS TECH by Tomas Kropas. The dissertation was prepared in 2019–2026. Scientific consultant – Assoc. Prof. Dr Giedrė Streckienė. The dissertation was defended at the public meeting of the Dissertation Defence Council of the Scientific Field of Mechanical Engineering in the Aula Doctoralis Meeting Hall of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University at 9 a.m. on 24 April 2026. The dissertation examines the operation of the evaporator in an air–source heat pump (ASHP) and freezing processes under dynamic climatic conditions. The relevance of the research stems from the increasing application of such heat pumps in the context of energy sustainability, especially during the cold season, when low temperatures and high absolute outdoor air humidity can cause frost to form on the evaporator heat exchanger, reducing the efficiency of the air–source heat pump. The main objective of the work is to investigate the operation of an air heat pump during the cold season and to develop a dynamic model integrating an evaporator defrost evaluation methodology to determine the impact of freezing on the heat pump’s seasonal efficiency. The following tasks are addressed in the dissertation: to evaluate frost assessment and mitigation measures, to perform experimental investigations under different environmental conditions, to develop an operational evaluation methodology and a dynamic air–source heat pump model in the environment of the transient (time–varying) process systems modelling tool (Transient System Simulation Tool) – TRNSYS. Thermodynamic, parametric, and system analysis methods are applied, combined with experimental investigations and dynamic modelling. The dissertation consists of an introduction, three chapters, general conclusions, references, and a list of the author’s scientific publications on the topic of the dissertation. The First Chapter presents a literature review on the operation of the air–source heat pumps and the problem of evaporator freezing. The Second Chapter describes the methodology of experimental investigations, the test bench, and the methodological basis for the development and logic of the dynamic model. The Third Chapter analyses the data of the experimental investigations. It presents the results of the developed dynamic model in the TRNSYS environment, including model validation and application of the model under different climatic conditions. The scientific novelty of the dissertation is based on experimental investigation of frost formation under real conditions, development of a frost assessment methodology and its integration into a dynamic TRNSYS model, enabling prediction of air–source heat pump performance under different climates or different operating modes of the heat pump itself. The practical significance lies in the possibility of applying the model to system design and performance prediction even with insufficient manufacturer data. The topic of the dissertation has been published in nine scientific publications, of which two are in journals indexed in the Web of Science database, and the research results have been presented at four scientific conferences, three of which were held in Lithuania and one abroad.
